When Maestro Ilayaraaja came into the industry, with Bharadiraaja's, Annakilli, it created unrest in the Tamil Film world and the film and its music went to to become big hits and Ilayaraaja had arrived. Quite soon he was popular among the Indian Filmdom. His market was nearly down in 1990, when A R Rahman came. By then Rahman's ad jingles were already popular in the households, but Roja created the stirr. (The Leo Coffee (Arvind Swamy) ad directed by Rajeev Menon, had A R Rahman's music).
The entire country noticed A R Rahman through Roja. It was path breaking and broke all language barriers. The film, Roja was dubbed in 5 languages, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi and Malayalam. Today A R Rahman is internationally known and is popular and he also venturing into Hollywood films.
But not many know which is Yuvan Shankar Raja's first film. His music is popular only among the Tamilians and at the most a few South Indians. Yuvan did not create any ripples like his father or Rahman.
So, you can never say,
Yesterday: Ilayaraaja, Today: A R Rahman, Tomorrow: Yuvan Shankar Raaja
The correct statement would be:
Yesterday: Ilayaraaja, Today: A R Rahman, Tomorrow: God decides
Yuvan in this birth cannot achieve what his father or what A R Rahman have achieved. He would be doing only Tamil, Telugu or Kannada films. Karthik Raja atleast did 2 Hindi films, doubt if Yuvan will make it to Bollywood also. He can concentrate on Tamil films, he will do well only in Tamil.

Jay,
I think that you are completely wrong. People are saying that VS is better than YSR now, but VS has been in the industry for many Years. YSR did not enter TFm expecting to be a full time MD. He only decided on this as his career path after Poovellam Kettuppar which was his actual first movie.
YSR will always be the best.!

All okay, but Bharathiraaja had nothing to do with Annakkili. Bharathiraja's debut was in 1977 with 16 Vayathinile.

One has wait and see. As for the ripple, it doesn't always have to be the first film. Yuvan is recognised today, atleast in southern film industry. He is one of those Music Directors whose film cassette u can buy without having to listen to the song first. This young man has built a good reputation, Now we will just have to wait and see, if he can excel his peers.
Hope he does well.

Jay, YOu posted this message alrteady in http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/4709.08.43.29.html but your lust for creating new threads making you look sick pal. In most of your threads your information is babbling. For eg in a thread you said VS and SAR and Sitpi never sang which is not true and even a basic tfm fan knows it. Folowing are some of the many threads you created in a specific time of the dat and which all went ignored. now you use a comment you already did in a thread like http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/4709.08.43.29.html
Ok man just wanted to point out but these are not the worst threads in here anyway. But RELAX!

Like Sivam says the breakthrough film need not be
a first film.
However, it is usually the first film. Why? For
a new MD to be a breakthrough, the music from him should create a new formula, a freshness of sound and style. And the MD takes usually 5-10 years to discover his new style.
This new formula should have breakthroughs in every department of music: Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, Orchestration, Production. Of these Melody, Orchestration and Production are the most important perceived factors.
Melody: The breakthrough MD creates a new formula for melody. He usually simplifies melody and chandams (Ilaiyaraja brought in Folk melodies with short phrases and almost no Carnatic gamakams; Rahman brought in simple chandams with emphasis on soulful rendering and singer improvising)
Orchestration: The new MD brings in new styles of accompaniment that were not heard before. To this day, "Machaane paththeengala" amazes me with its
abundance of new styles. Look at how it changes accompaniment so fluently in every two lines of melody - starts with girl humming lalee, followed by flute/girl call response, the pallavi uses unusual sticks/strum backing, interludes use
folk dafli, north indian tumri (kottangachi violin style), egyptian rhubarb and tamil melam. Charanams are sung over tabla and then heighten up under uruvi melam.
With all these change of styles, the song is tightly held together by the melody.
This song gave a new paradigm of dynamic orchestral color changing and redefined accompaniment.
Same way Rahman brought in styles from 1980s-90s
western pop and film scores into Tamil songs - reggae in Chinna Chinna Asai, Pop ballad and
Film score styles in Thamizha Thamizha, Ambience
and techno in Pudhu vellai mazhai.
As part of this department, the new MD also uses new instruments. Ilaiyaraja used a full orchestra of 70+ instruments and brought in new soloing instruments.
Production: Raja's breakthrough was the use of
symphonic orchestra guided by written score. Rahmans breakthrough was the use of a multitrack recorder and a full fledged dsp effect studio with world class sound samples.
In order to make such a breakthrough, the new MD
should be totally dissatisfied with the current
music king and should search for freshness. This
is not a one day process, but usually takes a few years of sabbath. Raja in Theni might have imitated KVM and MSV but when he came to Madras
he spent at least a couple of years deeply studying western classical and modern pop. Rahman would have started composing in the styles of MSV and Raja, but then he took to Jingles and discovered new perceptions of music.
All current MDs either imitate Rahman or Raja's
perception, they see what the two SHOW them. They
do not see new things the way Rahman and Raja saw.
YSR, VS, KR, Deva can create good songs which move us emotionally, using the techniques of
Raja and Rahman, but we have not heard a breakthrough from them.

Another way of looking at the breakthrough is
asking the question: Whose style is the MD imitating? (I am not using this as a negative sense, but as meaning 'whose songs does he learn from and get inspired by')
Ilayaraja did not imitate MSV, instead he chose to imitate Bach, Mozart and his mother's voice.
Rahman did not imitate Raja, instead he chose to
imitate Enigma, Vangelis and John Williams.
You cannot imitate Rahman's songs and create a breakthrough.
The closest Deva came to a breakthrough was Aasai.
Konja Naal poru thalaiva has lot of breakthrough elements in it.

As always, beautiful writing rjay !!
"In order to make such a breakthrough, the new MD
should be totally dissatisfied with the current
music " - absolutely true.
When Raja made his debut he was 33, ARR was 26 but YSR is still 22 !! May be he will find a path breaking formula some time in future.
