Obsessions of Lyricists

"Obsessions" is actually a strong word. What I had in mind is certain things that you can identify with a poet or lyricist.
An example would be Bharathiar and Kannamma. Bharathi literally imagined Kannan as a woman and sang many love songs in praise of "her".

  Kannadhasan also had a thing for Kannan, although it was only bakthi. :-))
  You can see him "inserting" Kannan in so many situations, that I don't think that I need to give examples.
  
  Bharathiyar, Kannadhasan-ai paththi ezhuthiya piragu Vairamuthu-vai paththi ezhutha yenakkey koochamaaga irukkuthu - but let's take it as a literary discussion. :-))
  
  Vairamuthu is certainly obsessed with the words: veirvei and invariably comparing it to theerththam! I can't help shuddering.
  There are at least two songs: Ennavaley adi ennavaley and the recent Anbey anbey kollathey.
  What's about him that he enjoys demeaning oneself as the ultimate in love? Thinna echchi, etc. etc.

  Vairamuthu's earlier fixations were anything that starts with 'deva' and 'raja' like deva mayakkam, deva kuyilgaL etc.

  Guys,
  Vairamuthu has many catch phrases/words he uses every season. When he started out, it used to be "Thaagam": "Thaagam edukkura neram",
  "Adikkadi Thagam Vanthu Aalai Kudikkum", etc.
  
  "Kamban, Shelley" is another of his favorite phrases which he used in at least two or three songs including, "Kamban engu ponan" from "Jaadhimalli" and "Kamban Shelley kavithai" from Rangeela dub, I think.
  
  VM also used the expression Janagana mana in many of his poems, not to mention the song from "Vaaname Ellai".
  
  Vaali uses the cheesiest cliches around: "Kanal neeral Thaagam Theerathu" from "Oh Priya, Priya" and "Kanal Neeral Theeratha Thagam, Gangai Neeral"
  from "Puthu Puthu Arthangal". Also, for awhile Vaali was fond of the irony that Paal and Kal had the same color which he used tiresomely in several
  songs, including,"Paal pola Kallum undu" from "Unakkenna Melae Nindrai". This brings me to his other fond word, Nanthalala which must be Vaali's
  homage to Bharathiyaar.
  
  I can't think of any crude repetitions by Kannadhasan. But the following similies and metaphors should be outright condemned from further use by any song writer:
  Anna Nadai, Annam pola nadai
  Maan Vizhi and its variations
  Vael Vizhi and its variations
  Kuyil Kural and its variations
  
  Maybe cliches in songs should be a thread unto itself.

  Nov, regarding VM's self-demeaning love songs you were onto something even if it is digressing from the thread a little. Somehow VM equates, Obsessive/Possessive disfunctional behavior for a deep love. Given a choice, no sane person would or should want someone who professes,"Nee pogum theruvil Aangalai vida matten sila pengalai vida matten" Maybe there is an element of playfulness there but we know where he's coming from.
  
  Another of VM's obsessions is that a lover forgetting his/her name/mothertongue upon seeing his/her mate.
