Illayaraja springs a surprise
The stupendous success of the audio cassettes sales of Illayaraja’s score in Kathiliku
Mariyathai has come as a big surprise to the audio industry. The maestro had ceased to
be a favourite with the teenage crowd and it had been a long time since he had given any
hit. Apart from this, the producers did not run any promos on TV or hold any launch
function for the audio release. So the general opinion is what contributed to the sales of the
album was the box-office success of the film. Keep it up Raja.

If I understand right, SCREEN says
The Cassette Sales of KM is because of the
Success of The Movie and not because of the
music.
This really stinks!

I feel the songs made the 75 day film a grant success into a record 22 crore collection as of now. Screen hardly knows about IR's potential to hit a film with nothing. However Kaadhalukku mariaathai has the stuff to become a hit even without a good music. But definitely IR's music promoted the success atleast by a factor of 2.5. Probably this is the first occasion in last 4 - 5 years that songs are becoming popular without adds or cassete launching or Maltrading. So people are not able to digest the success of raja and KM.

Well, the article seems weird. he says the music
was a hit b'cos of the film and also says keep it up Raaja.?? Stupid ain't it.??
But it's true that the industry was surprised when the songs became a hit . Even before, IR was churning out goodies, (devadhai , Raman Abdulla etc ) but they went unnoticed. So it's a surprise that KM Clicked.

Doesn't it come as a surprise to everyone, that inspite of the great hit of Kaathalukku Mariyaathei, Fazil has announced his next movie with a new MD called Johnny?

What is the surprise ??? People have been leaving IR for a longtime.
Even Barathiraaja who was planning to introduce his son Manoj in a BIG TIME movie
with IR music. But yesterday Ad. in Thinathanthi says "ARR" in BIG letters.
(name of the movie is Taj Mahal, story by Maniratnam, Photography: RajivMenan, Dir: BR)
I agree with SathyaV that the movie had the stuff and
the music helped.

Bones, Bharathiraja's other movie( I think it is "Vaakkappatta Bhommi" with Saratkumar ) is Musiced by IR and still is; "Tajmahal" was never started with IR as MD. From day 1, this mega-movie has been assigned to ARR and there is no change.

I don't think Fazil will leave IR forever like others did. From his first to the latest, IR has been scored very good numbers (i'm talking about tamil movies only). I guess Fazil has directed some malayalam movies without IR. Is his next movie in malayalam?

NOV, Is Johny the MD for Fazil's next tamil movie? In malayalam I don't think he worked with raja. if it were malayalam, then it will not be a surprise. If it were Tamil, it will be a shock news as Fazil had never worked without Raja and he never had ego problems with Raja.

I don't see anything wrong in Screen's point. The success of the movie has done the job of what feverish ad campaigns would do. So there is nothing that takes the credit away from IR. IR fans should be happy that his efforts didn't go in vain as it did for several dabba movies in the past.

I think FAZIL has made that decision only for his malayalam versions. He cant leave raja and raja always gave his best for fazil.Raja and Fazil are in the same wavelength when it comes to filom making and thats abvious if we can see all the Fazil movies in Tamil. In spite of all these if Fazil leaves Raja, its because, Raja has the talent to surpass every aspect of film making with his music, and that must have made fazil a bit uncomfortable, for raja can easily swallow the greatest movies and make it still greater by his BGM and songs. Hope Fazil doesnt rot like another Balachander.

But, i have my doubts about vAkkapatta boomi. I dont think its Raaja scoring music for that movie, as Raaja has been in and out of this movie, thanks to the press.

IR should seriously consider accepting a project from Barathiraja. BR never digested IR's success. He fights with Raja and comes back often putting titles like "ENNUYIR THOZHAN". Barathiraja should give up his self destructing ego. It is time to get together and regain their regime. But still he has ego.

Yes, you are right, I forgot the other project of BR - vAkappatta boomi.
As Gopal said, IR is in-and-out of VBoomi. After the cinema strike and BR leading the
PADAIPALIGAL - he wants his next movie to be a great success for that
music is very important - don't know which way he is going to sAnjufy.
Is it NOT Fazil who directed all the movies produced by IR (except Rajathi Raja)!!!! like
pommukutti, varusham16, poovizili vasal, prabu-revathy padam (kundu onnu vachirukkEn!!)

Bones - No it is not! IR's first production was Alaigal Oaivathillei, which you know was directed by Bharathiraja. A couple others I remember are the Murali movie (with beautiful songs such as Malarey pesu mouna mozhi & Oru jeevan azhaiththathu) and Ramarajan's Enga Ooru Paattukkaran. These were not directed by Fazil.

Pg Bones is rite. Ilaiyaraja brought Fazil to tamil films thro Poove poochudava..aamam he only produced this film.
He was also the producer for 'poovizhi vaasalile',
varusham 16 and 'karpoora mullai'-all these 3 were
directed by Fazil.
But i still cant believe that Fazil is using a Mallu MD for a tamilfilm(Jhonny is now a popular M D in Malyalam films)There should be some other
facts to it-Raja might have refused to work with Fazil(this had happened few times)or the film could be a direct dubbing from Malayalam.
When fazil remade 'karpoora mullai'in Malyalam(ende suryaputhri)Raja was the MD and the songs became a instant hit(Raja used the same tunes)
So i still doubt that Fazil would have let down raja..

AyyayyO, why this? Raaja could be busy with other assignments. Moreover, Raaja's tfm no. is increasing. He may as well cut down his mal, tel, kan movies. Thats all. One thing is fact. Raaja is doing music for all SI languages as he has been doing right from day one. (I think he has done 25 mal movies till date)
Bones, yes, VPBoomi is simply in and out of Raaja for one reason. BR wants a hit. Then, who else can give a hit other than Raaja, when it comes to manvAsanai??

Hello friends,
I used to be regular reader of Screen during my school and college days, which by being the only weekly film news paper/magazine for a long time with lot of mega size film ads (Akin to our Dina thanthi during Diwali film season) was and I hope still popular. But these guys always used to mention south indian movie stuff in just 1 page with the whole magazine devoted to mainly Hindi movies, and I always used to note lot of gapsa and 100% dubba news about South indian actors ,movies, actresses ,directors and music directors. still i have read some interesting news related to our talaivar IR . In my openion "KM" movie is just above an average movie and it was not even close to Fazil's previous movie "Varusham 16" , and as usual the tamil nadu crowd gets carried away with some very very ordinary sentiments, but for IR's super duper songs and BGM the movie is just above average, and the only difference made by Fazil is the climax probebly which was sodappal in "V 16" however I was told V16's malayalam version had a different and better climax
