Ysr did an interview in London about his music career and upcoming projects.Also he has left a lot of suspense about his new movies, MAnathai Thirudi Vittai and Nandhaa.Does anyone have any info about the release of these movies and their audios.? Also Thulluvatho Ilamai has been re-released with 3 bonus tracks and has anyone heard the tracks?

  Today, a special interview with successful young Music Director, Yuvanshankar Raja, who is joining us in the studio today.
  Aravindhan, Poovelaam Kettupar, Velai, Unakaga ellam unakaga, Rishi, The Blast, Dheena and Thulluvatho Ilamai are his hit albums that he has Md’d for.
  
  We are happy to welcome Yuvan to our studio today.
  
  Q : In 1997 you were introduced to the film music industry through your first movie Aravindhan. How did you get the opportunity to work on this project? Was it purely accidental or were you offered the movie through some of your other work ?
  A : I have to say it was purely accidental. I was working on my album at that time when the director of Aravindhan, T.Siva heard my songs and asked me whether I would do the music for the trailer for the movie. I was 16 at the time and I did my level best that I could and he was impressed with the music and gave me the film.
  
  Q : Your music is both melodious and successful. Your father and brother are also Music Directors, so I have to ask this question. Did you always want to be a Music Director?
  A : Actually, I didn’t. I always wanted to be a pilot. Most people are shocked by this answer but I have always liked flying, since I was a young boy.
  
  Q : In your album “ The Blast” You have sung as well as Unnikrishnan, Nithyasree, Kamal Hassan, Naagoor Hanifa, Rajalakshmi and Srinivas. What was your experience when you were working on this album? And what inspired you to do this album?
  A : The whole album is based on the thought of World Peace. At the time when I was working on this album, India was carrying out Nuclear Testing so I used it as an inspiration for my work. Sujatha sir (Writer) also contributed to this album. He wrote a small piece on world peace which was read by Kamal Hassan sir in one of the songs.
  
  Q : I believe the song “Mama mama” is in Aboghi ragam from your album. Even nowadays, the movie songs that stay in peoples hearts and are listened to repeatedly, seem to be the carnatic music based songs. Don’t you get the opportunity to do Carnatic based songs?
  A : I do have the opportunity, but I can only do a classical based song dependant on the movie and script of the film.
  
  Q : Nandha is your next project. What can you tell us about it?
  A : Well Nandha is a totally Indian sounding movie. It’s totally different.
  
  Q : How is it different?
  A : I can’t actually say or it will ruin the surprise, so you’ll just have to wait and see, but I have made a conscious effort to avoid western instruments in it. Bala sir wanted the music to be how my dad would do it without copying which is very tough. But it was overall a great experience.
  
  Q : Many people may not know this but you have sung in the movie “Anjali” as a young boy. How was your experience in this and how did you feel when you heard your voice on screen?
  A : I think sothappalaa thaan paadiyiruppen. The song Motta Maadi had a small rap portion which my father wrote and he told me to sing it in Michael Jackson style. I just did what I thought was Michael Jackson style and the song became a hit.
  
  Q : In “Anjali” you sang in your father’s musical composition and you have continued to do so even till now. I heard that your father sang for you in Nandha. What was your experience when he sang for you?
  A : Well, getting dates were tough. My father came and sang as any other singer would, but finding a suitable time for him to come and record was very difficult. I waited 2 – 3 months to get a slot from him.
  
  Q : So he didn’t come and sing for you immediately because you are his son?
  A : No, his callsheet comes first. I had to wait my turn and he sang and went.
  
  Q : Did he have any comments on your song?
  A : No he didn’t say anything. He just said it was good and that he could only really tell once the final mix had been done.
  
  Q : Your father uses a lot of old singers in his songs such as Jamuna Rani and PB Sreenivas. You used Nagoor Hanifa in the Blast. Do you think you will use them in any more of your upcoming songs?
  A : I may use them but it all depends on the song I’m working on.
  
  Q : In the move Thulluvatho Ilamai, the song “ Ithu Kathala” is a fully western song. Your songs are nearly all western, but what was your inspiration for this song?
  A : Well the style of music I was inspired by is UK Garage. It is really happening here now. Artists such as Craig David and the Artful Dodger are doing well so I too was inspired by it.
  
  Q : Did the song have English Lyrics?
  A : No the introduction piece is English, but the rest of the song is pure Tamil. I thought it would be different to have purely Tamil Lyrics in a purely Western song.
  
  Q : What are your other new releases?
  A : Well Nandha, then Manathai Thirudivittai starring Prabhudeva and Gayathri Jeyaram, then I have a film by Kalaipuli Dhanu called “ Enna Solla Pogirai” which is all new face and I also have a Telugu movie.
  
  Q : Is that why you came to U.K?
  A : Yes I came to finish my recording for the Telugu movie.
  
  Q : You come to London very often, what have been your experiences here?
  A : The last time I came here was to find a studio and now I have found a great guy called Rob to work with. I have gained much experience and it’s nice to come and record away from India for a change.
  
  Q : Your father has also tried his hand at move production and direction. Is this something you’d like to do?
  A : I would like to produce. The films would have to be new and different. Almost, experimental movies. It wouldn’t bother me whether it ran or not, but it has to be an achievement. I mean like a movie that has never been done in Tamil movie history or even in the whole of cinema history. It would be special in all aspects, Technical, script and music. I think nowadays, movies are solely song oriented. Songs over-dominate in movies. I think it should be like Hollywood, where each movie does have songs, but the songs don’t feature in the film. They have a separate soundtrack
  
  Q : Films like these have been done already?
  A : Yes but not the type I would like to do. I want a separate soundtrack I think it would be for the better of cinema as the actual script would be appreciated more.
  
  Q : What message do you have for your London Audience?
  A : My audio sales are best oveseas. I receive a lot of fn mail and E-mails from people all over asking about the meaning of songs and also giving me their opinion on my tracks. Especially from London, this seems to be where my biggest fan base is, so I’d like to just say thank-you to you all.

  Balu, thanks. i am excited for Yuvan. First, what a great talent at such a young age (22 yrs) it is very encouraging and interesting. travelling places takes a composer places. Look at IR himself, played music in villages across south India and see the difference....

  Balu, I think that you have done a great job on the interview. I had chance to hear it and you have it word for word. It was a great way for us to know about YUvan as his whole family is very tight lipped when it comes to inteviews. Yuvan was very open and I enjoyed the interview.I wish it went for longer.
