Lyric or tune which is important

I think we have discussed enough who is better MD or who is a great singer. But I think for a hit song lyric and tune are like really important.Do anybody have any info on when good lyric was flop (not recognised) because of bad tune or vice versa. Even we can further go ahead discussing incidents when song was flop because of singer even though both lyric and tune are good.

  write a nice tamil lyric, compose a great tune,

  Both of them are important but i feel they can survive independent of each other also.
  A lot of songs in favor of lyric have already been posted.
  Let me post for the tunes.. I can immediately think of
  1. Bhol Sajni (Doli Saja Ke Rakhna) - instrumental version. Its unbeleivable. Sure the song had great lyrics but the tune by itself brings out the mood perfectly.
  2. Bombay Theme Music - eventhough some feel it may have been copied.

  1. Achcham Illai - Indra
  2. Poongodiyin Punnagai - Iruvar

  I cant agree more on ur views abt Sukwinder singh. When Ilayaraja and ar rahman are being ruthlessly bashed in this df, I wonder why someone hasnt started a anti-sukwinder thread yet for his shameless murder of music (forget abt lyrics). I am sorry if i have offended any die-hard HCSSF.. ;-)

  I'd say that the tune is more important than lyrics. When you go to buy a CD or watch a movie or something ... people usually ask, who did the music for it. They don't go, who's the lyricist?
  
  Pluss, I think tune by itself probably would appeal to more people than the lyrics alone. I mean, the lyrics alone can stand out, then its called poetry probably?
