It's good to see activity on this thread. I keep visiting about 37 different threads on S. Janaki at newtfmpage. Most of these threads are inactive.
Thanks, rajjaj, for the list of songs. As a matter of fact, I am currently compiling lists of JanakiAmma's songs for a database in a fans' group. I have, so far, compiled a list of about 500 Kannada songs, and about 200 Tamil songs. Soon, we'll start on Malayalam and Telugu songs. we are still continuing the work. Don't know how long it will take to compile a list of all 16000+ songs. But at the group, we are slowly and steadily getting there.
Anyone who is interested in this effort, or any other aspect related to JanakiAmma, is welcome to join the fans' group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sjanaki . This fans' group works in close association with www.sjanaki.com

Janaki amma is really a gem in Singers . She should get Bharath Ratna award, Dada Saheb Phalke award and Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards..
Why don't we ppl recommend to PResident(we can write letters or emails tohim - this is todl by our SPB in a concert at Guntur) Why don't we try this.
Does anyone can do for this?

Why has Janaki been called a "SOPORIFIC" singer at http://www.sjanaki.com ?
http://www.m-w.com (Merriam-Webster)
soporific:
-----------
Function: adjective
Etymology: probably from French soporifique, from Latin sopor deep sleep; akin to Latin somnus sleep -- more at SOMNOLENT
Date: 1665
1 a : causing or tending to cause sleep b : tending to dull awareness or alertness
2 : of, relating to, or marked by sleepiness or lethargy

Av
The word also has synonyms like hypnotic, drug-like effect. I guess the authors meant to write something to say that her voice is magical and puts you in a trans, not to sleep:-)

Digression:
That reminds me - I once had a lovely discussion with one of my relatives about a certain singer XYZ. My relative wanted to praise a particular (supposedly) pathos-filled rendition of that singer. But he made the mistake of translating a Hindi phrase "dard-bhari awaaz" (= pathos-filled voice) into English as "painful voice".
Such un-intended slips can easily cause quite a havoc!

Thanks, av and Kaumudi, for your comments. Taking your valuable inputs, the web site has been updated. As Kaumudi correctly guessed, the original intention was to qualify her voice as hypnotic/magical. Now, there shouldn't be any more confusion. And the bit on the "painful voice" was really funny :-D. (I have to tell my friends about it now.)
Please feel free to continue to come up with suggestions. We also have a Yahoo! Group that is intended for discussions on how to improve www.sjanaki.com and your participation will be invaluable. (Please see my June 24 post above.)
Thanks again!

I am a die-hard fan of Smt.S.Janaki. Janakiamma is definetly versatile than Ashaji. Recently I listened to a few hindi film songs rendered by Janakiamma.See the expression in the song "Aaya jabse thoo dil mein aaya" from the film "Jhooti", "sharab cheez hai bhuri" from the film "Aag ka gola", "Prabhu more avagun" from the film "Sur Sangam".
My inference is that S.Janaki is the most versatile singer than any other singer in India.

one mr.satish chandra, meerakrishna, and pranav are continnuesly praising s.janaki and insulting the legend singers .s.janakiyamma is great this is a fact .but people who loves real music will try to avoid janakiyamma's songs because of you guy's stupid statements.one of you said that lata's and susheela's voice are thin and their songs are monotonous...shame on you.100%you don't know what is music.simmply copying something from somewhere, and trying to make janakiyamma as a goddess.lata and susheela are the last words of music.even janakiyamma said once "if I have an another birth I wish to become a singer like lataji and susheelamma".s.janaki knows herself very well, than others.Don't be narrow minded, try to hear songs of the most respected susheelamma and lata mangeshkar.Lata, susheela, asha, andjanaki , these singers are beyond comparison please leave them.don't praise anybody without any limit,if somebody is doing like this means they are the real enemies of that particular person.because useless praising will reduce the images of great personalities.Thank you and may god bless all "REAL" music lovers.

You stupid guys, why do you have to insult other singers like Lata and Asha? You fools don't seem to have knowledge of music beyond few states. Stop this non-sense.

Sometimes, it is not the voice, the sytle or whatever technicalities in delivering a song that makes one likeable.
For some mysterious ways, one get attached to a singer so much that you even like their worst song. For me, it is SJ. She just got something that I can not explain, justify nor defend. She just posses such aura that makes me fall for the songs.
