Hi friends ,
Of late i feel that though ILLAYARAJA is the best MD in terms of BGM ,can he give a hit now ..?Noiw pleas e do not say that bharti ,Azhagi ,Kaasi are hits ..I liked them but they are not great ..The cassete sales are good .Agreed.ILLAYARAJA desperatly fails in western beats (now ..),which is evident in DEVAN .Can he give hit like Punngai Mannan ,Veera,Thalapthi ..For the past four years ILLAS has kept quiet .I don't expect him to deliver music like Ar Rehman ,but can he deliver the music which he delivered 10 years ago ...?Something very different ,Melodious .
Even his latest ventures IVAAN ,Enn MANA VAAANIL are not great .IVAAN is good ,but when compare dto SINDU Bhairavi ...sorry ..ENN MANA VAANIL is just average ...say a simlar movie like KIzhagu Vasal had great songs ...!
what do u say ..?
IF i remember his last "GREAT" hit was KAdaluku MArriyadhai .....What do u say friends ..?

phantom
just one song in a movie doesnt make the songs a hit... raman abdullah, kadhal kavidhai , friends , kannukkul nilavu etc all had just one or two songs which were good though not great.... if you consider it as a hit, deva and SAR will consider most of their movies as hits... As mumbai ramki had told, can we buy the cassette without hearing it? Ivann has average songs and IMO can't be considered a hit... IR is not producing the magical notes he was producing once....Regd hindi music, It's total crap.... the essence of hindi music faded when ppl like kishore, md. rafi and RD burman left the scene and ppl like anand milind, laxmi-pyaralel, bappi lahari, anu malik etc came into picture.... for a hindi song, u just need two dolak beats and a singer singing thro his nose.... BTW are we in TFM or HFM ???

Also ILLAS music is martketed poorly ...take for instance SETHU ..I feel that SETHU had atleast 4 good sonsg ..Had the film been a flop ,nobody would have bought teh cassete ..
Second thing is that when ar rehman who is average in BGM can include his theme music in his albums (lagan ,ratchagan ,bombay and a lot ) , i feeel every ILLAS album should contain atitle track ..
Just Imagine if this had been done for HEYRAM or Sirai chalai ....WOW....
SO i would say that ILLAS 's consistency coupled with poor marketing is doing allthe works

... raman abdullah, kadhal kavidhai, friends, kannukkul nilavu
Anyone outside this forum can remember or recall the songs from the above movies?
The sad truth is, other than the hard core fans, no one else took great notice of these songs.
A simple fact - If nobody patronises a restaurant, it could also be that the food served there is lousy.

I still periodically listen to songs from Raman Abdullah (which has 3 great songs), Kadhal Kavidhai (I liked all the songs), Friends (all songs but two) and Kannukul Nilavu (all songs).
I would disagree with the the statement that if no one patronises a restaurant, then food must be lousy. I see that an ignorant and shallow restaurant. Lets just take the same example: it may be because that restaurant's location, the food may be pricey, the customers may be running after fast food ( a fad), another restaurant in the area may be advertising more heavily, the taste may be suitable only for a sophisticated few...An intelligent analyis must take into account such sophistication than a shallow and ignornant view point that was expressed that a restaurant without partons means food is lousy.
Also lets look at the corollary. Does an album or MD just because he is popular at a given time point mean that the album or the MD produces quality/ For this, I use my favorite example. This is the same populace which hugely supported Indira Gandhi, Jayalalitha, MGR, Laloo prads Yadav, Bal Thackeray etc. Just because these people had the mass support of the population, I cannot accept them as of quality (either good people or good leaders). To me ARR falls in the same category. Just because his albums sell more is no better reflection of quality than the same population's support of the type's of Indira Gandhi and jayalalitha a refecltion of quality.
May be most people like to go with other's preferences (that is if others like it, the album sells well, I'll join the crowd too) but I choose to be different and am my own judge of quality, irrespective of how the populce feels about some thing (which is totally irrelevent to my preferences).

You can give all kinds of excuses, but the fact remains that the food served is lousy.
People will patronise a good restaurant regardless of its location or priceyness or a fad that has lasted 10 years.
As for advertising, nothing beats word of mouth. After all the proof of the pudding is in the eating, is it not?

The response on the patronage of restaurant just reflects on the quality of food just reflects on the poor comprehension and sheer ignorance of the concepts in marketing as a science.

I think Kaadhal Kavidhai had great songs. Even if one is not IR fan, I think one should check it out.
