We have had n tending to impatience ( not infinity!) threads about IR & ARR. So let us talk primarily about the good output of other MDS.
For starters
1.adityan had a not so bad effort in " Oyila paadum paatu" & vettila potta shokkule". where is he now.
2.Thalai vasal had more than passable music by Ilaya barathi. where is he now.
3.Cheran paandiyan had half an excellent song by sowdaryan. The start of kaadal kaditham was very good but midway it jumps into familar zone.
4.rajan Nagendra recycled " Inti Inti ramayanam" in Veetukku veedu vaasapadi. the music for Iru Nilavugal is also good. where are they now?
5 aslam Musthafa had a great opening bit in" Kicchu kicchu pannuda ' . movie mitta mirasu. is he doing anything now.
6. Maragathamani aka MM Kreem aka Keeravani is also not heard these days. azhagan songs were quite good.
7 Amsaleka was ok in "selai kattum pennukk...'
8.Devenran was quite good in "Vedam Puthithu" But I think he got caught in the crossfire between IR & BR. They came together in Nadodi Thenral & we have not heard anything from devendran have we?
8 Narasimhan started with abang in achamillai2 but hten gradually fizzled out. Amir John gave him acouple of chances I suppose but that is about it barring a weak comeback in a Revathi movie.
Of course we can talk about Bharadwaj, Vidya SagarChirpi (if we have to!), Mani Sharma, et al.
Other one time wonders can also be read if not heard!

Saravanan, OISG,
Can you rock your memory on this one. In ithu Nijama- the movie being a koodu vittu koodu paayum kathai there was this situation of a bagavathar in the midst of his song as soon as he comes to Ra or Ri going of to English Rock! That is all I can remember , can you come up with the song please.
I think Thirumalai Thenkumari also had music by Kunnakudi. APN switched from KVM to Kunnakudi with vaa raaja vaa & " TT" followed. kankatchi also came subsequently. It had " Arangan aganthan.." dance potti song with APn providing the opening lines.

I think Kamal Hassan has bought the rights for Ithu Nijama ?and Avana Ivan ?.
Can someone confirm.
Nadu Iravil - VS Raghavan s performance was superb.
I loved Sambantham s "Eppdai than sir Nadanthirukkanum" in Andha Naal.Sivaji was terrific so was the lady who played his brother s wife.
SB s name brings into mind another versatile person Javar Seetharaman.I am told that he was a Professor of English in St.Joseph s college ,Trichy. Took to writing with "Udal Porul ".Moved to movies.. acted in many movies.Almost dubbed for all the telugu artists..KanthaRao was the principal beneficiary.

Vengayam,
Sorry for this belated reply-
Details reg. Idhu Nijama- 1948.
Produced by Soundararaja Iyengar.
This was a film made by SB when he was hardly 20 years old. What a genius he was! He was the MD of the film too.
The film was based on an English movie called 'Wonder Man'- what is wonderful is that 30 years later, 'Kalyanaraman' came with an almost similar story!!!
OISG is right, the elder brother Madhavan gets killed abroad, and his spirit enters younger brother Gopal, who runs a shop selling music instruments in India. So, while Gopal is sitting in his shop, humming 'Maarupalka' to himself, Madhu's aavi enters him, and he breaks into' Romeo, Antonio, Thayirvadayo'!!! -Excellent song, sung by SB himself.
Other memorable songs (also sung by him)include 'Anbenum amudhalithu' and 'Neela mayil vaagananey'.
Other films by SB as MD- Kaidhi-1951 and Avana Ivan- 1962 also had excellent songs.
As a child, I have seen SB many times- his house is quite close to mine in Chennai. I have seen him in the Anjeneyar temple in Royapettah High Road - always dressed is spotless white. His nameboard on the gatepost of his house, in the shape of a veenai- is still there till today, though he left for his heavenly abode in 1990.

As Vj mentioned Babul Bose did Nanbargal -SA C movie.
But some song looked like recycles from his hindi "Jeena Teri Gali me" -A Gulshan kumar release for Anuradha.SPB s "Sajjni" and "Kya Karthethe Sajna" were good.

OISG-
Among the Telugu composers- I like M Venu's work a lot- Remember the songs from Manjal Mahimai, enga Veetu Mahalakshmi, Kaanal Neer, Kaalam maari pochu etc- simple, but lilting compositions.
T Chalapathi Rao glittered in the few films he did in tamizh- Amaradeepam, Meenda Sorgam, Punar Jenmam--even forgotten films like Koodi vaazhndhaal kodi nanmai and Uththami Petra rathinam had memorable songs by Chalapathi.
S Rajeswara rao is considered a genius- his songs from Mangamma sabatham, Dasi abaranji, Chandralekha and Apoorva Sahodarargal may be forgotten today, but Missiamma and Kadan vaangi kalyanam are still heard with enjoyment.
S Dakshinamoorthi- has given some great songs in Valayapathi, Mangayar thilagam, Alibaba, Yaar Paiyan etc.
A Ramamarao- has left a lasting impact in Kanavaney kan kanda deivam (along with Hemanth Kumar), Manam pol mangalyam etc.
Some more Telugu MDs too have left behind lingering memories

Some 'Malarum Ninaivugal' (if people don't mind!)
I saw 'Nadu iravil' at West Mambalam National in 1970-71! This hall (!) was known as West Mambalam 'Safire'! Somewhere, Asokamithran has wondered whether the cowdung production of the whole world is from in front of West Mambalam National alone! (I don't know if it is still there!)
VS Ragavan is the villain in this whodunit film! Typical of Tamil audience, whenever he comes on screen, people shouted "Ivandhanda kolaigaaran! Ayogya rascal!" (and many more choice abuses in chaste 'Madras Bashai' which can't be reproduced here!) A friend of mine then told me that you should see these films (Nadu Iravil, Adhey KaNgaL etc.,) in the very first week to avoid losing the thrill!
How correct he was!

continuing CV s digression
We had servant maid at our native place who along with her husband suspected Nambiar when MGR died (Remember it was 1987!).Nambiar would have cursed god for giving him ears had he got a chance to listen to our maid.

Adding to Cinema Virumbi's list Thaen Mazhai (?) was also one of those thrillers in the trilogy of Adhey Kangal, and Nadu Iravil (all melded in the vision of Uumai Vizhigal). It was bit ahead of its time as well, choosing realism over masala, and was brilliantly done (cinematography) in black and white. Perhaps inspired by Orson Welles, Guru Dutt, Film-Noir shadowplay. I can remember watching it on TV (for that's where I chanced on it,) and being transfixed. The screamers of those days had a touch of class about them. I would still be a touch vary to see Adhey Kangal all by myself even today. Thanks for this unapologetic moment of sickening nostalgia
:-)
On a completely different note: Why aren't Gangai Amaran's songs being discussed? Or is he part of the Best circle? Just curious.

Kupps, 'Chithiram pesuthadi'- a great song indeed, but it was by TG Lingappa- not Chalapathi.
