I take it people are largely indifferent. Understandable, since this is hardly what one would call a high-profile project, and Barot didn't exactly leave TFM in a cloud of glory. But I'm interested; after years of sound-design, he's getting to give his tunesmithing an airing. Even if the songs fail to deliver celestial melodies, I'm sure there will be sonic marvels galore, and scads of hot rhythms and startling arrangement choices.
Anyone else anticipating this album?

I really liked his VIP... Thought at that time that he was the only possible competitor to ARR (even though he did some additional programming for a few ARR songs) in terms of sound engineering... but unfortunately he didn't get to do other movies!
'Minnal Oru Kodi' was such a good song...
So waiting for kanna! Hope he delivers something good.

I feel like Robinson Crusoe discovering unknown footprints in the sand. Glad to see someone else here.
Does anyone have an idea about the team behind this film? Who is Anand, the director? Who did he apprentice with?

Yup, I loved ranjit barot's VIP. Not just minnal oru kodi, in fact all the songs in the album. Always kept wondering why he dint do more movies...
And the last thing I heard about him, he was doing additional programming to Anu Malik. My god!!!
At least, good that he is back :-)

Listening to these tunes after ages here:

My current take is that they don't feel dated at all, and overall he shows more grasp of melody than he's been given credit for. Yet, I'll admit that the production is very show-offy, it's obvious he's very hungry for success from the
relentless everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach.
Hope he feels confident enough now to take it down a notch. If only he'd been given as many chances as, say, YSR, he'd surely have produced at least some albums as excellent as 7GRC in all the time he's spent bringing Anu Malik's
compositions into the 21st century.
While on the topic, I can't recommend Aks strongly enough to all music-lovers. It's the peak of the Anu-Barot collaborations, and sounds as stylish, entertaining, and different today as when it was released. There are Rahman
influences, obviously, but there's more to it than just that. Listened to in an immersive sound environment, such as a car, its wealth of detail becomes apparent. Its careful creation of atmosphere via unusual samples, guitars,
soprano sax, precision beat-crafting, not to mention interesting lyrics by Gulzar, still has no close comparison. The failure of the film has discouraged imitation, thus saving the sound from listener-fatigue.
Indeed Rahman was so impressed with this album that he called up Barot to congratulate him for his work on it. I have a good link here that proves this, while also, incidentally, demonstrating the tension that exists between successful composers.

My recent infatuation with Aks is one reason for my excitement about "Kanna". Though
I do wish he'd signed KV Anand's Kanaa Kanden rather than Anand's Kanna. Now that'd
have been a dream relaunch!

Yes, it is good to see him back in Tamil after a long time....After his VIP, I think he went to assist Anu malik full time (and assisted TB for a few films during KKKK period). I am still wondering why he did not get any offers after that!

I think he cares about money big time (Around 75 Lakhs).
Thatswhy he got out from " Three Roses".
Maybe Ramba did not give enough money.

Really, is that so? Interesting titbit, thanks. And just in time too, I was about to pronounce the thread moribund. It's strange though, he can't be earning that much for all the behind-the-scenes slaving that he's currently doing. And 75 lakhs is close to what the topmost MDs are earning, who'd be willing to pay him that much? Surely not a small film like Kanna!?
