Definitely Munpaniyaa....
But Kadhalin deepam is also a good song.

Mun paniya uses a lot of 'sophisticated' sounds (e.g. - the chorus singing), which have been added to enhance the beauty of the song. But 'Kadhalin deepam' is extraordinarily simple, uses violin orchestration (western style) to perfection in the interludes and is a 'carnatic' number too. The second song thus is a far ahead winner than the first. But both had stunning 'rendering' by the one & only SPB.

mun pani's strengths:
-excellent bass line and matching melam
-SPB
-Decent lyrics
weakness:
-the hemaphrodite voice of Malgudi Suba (Malgudikkaama paesaama thaengudi kural maarum)
-the chorus that sounds so much like the "koduththu vaiththa poovae poovae" chorus from "Anbae Anbae Kollaathae"
Kaadhalin Deepam
-no noticeable weakness

come on guys,
Kaadhalin Deepam is a master piece.
A slow love song on a action superstar and that too in a comedy film. What more do you want, to say that it beats mun paniya left right and center.
Mun paniya is good. With out SPB, I don't think that we will be talking about the song this much.

Munpaniya is a very mediocre song.To reach Illaiyaraaja's heights Yuvan has to go several light years. Both Yuvan and Karthik have not composed one lasting memorable melody and they are an insult to their father.Mun paniya's chorus line that Shubha has sung is so comical.Yuvan has to grow up and mature.Keyboard sounds are not enough to make a song. And Yuvan shd be penalised for making the great S.P.B. sing beyond his natural pitch.Pls don't compare his songs to the great compositions of I.R. or even A.R.R.

kaadhalin deepam onru is a classic. I was completely taken in when I heard/saw it for the first time on TV long after it was originally released. SPB does a great job.

It is very sad that a great song like "kathalin dheebam" is compared against "mun paniya".
The plus point of IR's music is not just tune and background, it is the feeling he brings into the situation of the song. Even without lyrics, even without song sequence we can feel the idea of music. Which is why, his BGM has come to the attention of people.

Interestingly, read IR's comments on how this song was composed... This makes you even more awestruck at the song!!

Nandha;
What a stupid comparison, what next Shankaraparanam Vs Salanghai Oli???
both of the songs u have mentioned were beautifully rendered by the one & only Dr.SPB,
Oh BTW, I heard SPB is to get Tamil Nadu state award 4 "Mun paniya", is it true?

pathan ..very good point. Yes, IR does bring the mood into the song. But this cannot be done without the tune. It is the tune which is key to bringing out the 'mood'. Our forefathers were smart enough to categorize certain sequence of swaras as producing certain mood (rAgam). IR has understood/imbibed this very well. By using the rAgams as a guide, IR is able to create tunes to suit the situation. Or better yet, he has fantastic insight into a sequence of notes and its emotional connotation. All im my amatuer 'armchair research' (but with the music playing :))
(BTW, kAdhalin deepan onRu has a fantastic mood..the tune is very much ahead of mun paniyaa, IMHO. I remember seeing this on TV oliyum oLiyum..rajni walking with his hands in his pocket in a wood (very cool) and the heroine in her bedroom (yuck) (designed by bad set designers. Also, there is a 'tenderness' in many of IR's love songs that is missing in YSR's).

After reading the excerpt from `pAl nilAppAdhai' in ambalam, I was wondering whether IR's sickness had anything to do with `zarE zindagi' import...but he has more than compensated in `kAdhalin deepam ondRu'...a soft & enjoyable song.

Kaadhalin Deepam Ondru is one of the few SPB-IR's songs that would like to have. Mun Paniyaa naa kettadhe illai. Which movie is it in and where can I find it?
