Recent advent in technology and also the increased awareness of the directors have brought a new perspective in making and picturing the songs. So
sometimes we end up liking the song for its other aspects instead of the MUSIC.
However there have been instances when we liked to watch the video though it was mediocre mainly due to the music.I would like fellow tfm listeners to discuss this aspect in this thread.
To make a start..En vettu jannal etti ean pakkura.
I think the pic wasn't all that good...but the song made me see the video again.

I think most of MGR movies belong to this category!

The picturisation of those wonderful songs from Nizlalhal was quite 'shocking', as one's imagination of what the song will be picturised with is totally different from what was shown....

BB,
I liked your posting.
Kannodu Kanbadhellam sounded extremely good to me when i heard the album before the movie was released. IMO, the best part of the song is the final swarams. But the niceties of the swarams got lost in the computer-simulated-technical-jugglary in the picturisation. The audience start lauffing at the skeleton-dancing etc, and the impact of the swarams is lost!

Shankar,
I believe the picturization of "Poonkathave Thaalthiravai' is not bad. What else do u expect. Some fast beat dance for that?.
BR's picturization of songs in late 70's and 80's use to be perfect. Be it Ponmalai Pozhuthu or Kovimani Osai thanai, or Aayiram Thamarai mottukale..'. His camera angle use to be very imaginative and innovative.

IMO 'ponmAlai pozhudhu' in nizhalgaL is one of the best picturised songs in TFM. Madras in evening is so exquisitely picturised.
Portions on madai thiRandhu was good (could have avoided the half-clad group dancers).

Theres a song with Radhika and Sudhakar in kizhake pogum rail? Lovely number, but the picturisation is really bad. Radhika and sudhakar both have done a terrible job.. radhika tries to do some bharatnatyam pose etc in that song.. sakikaadhu! Can someone identify the song i am referring to?

Chandy,
Its "Manjolai Killi Thano...Maanthaano". Its a nicely picturised song. The fact is Radhika, did not know Bharathanatiyam at that time. Inspite of that, the song came out well. The lack of knowledge of bharatnatyam of Radhika, is compensated well by the nice picturization of the song, nice camera angles, excellent background...

Dorai,
Thanks for that info. I like that song very much, but IMO, the picturisation is pathetic. Both sudhakar and radhika stand like stones and that asattu grin on sudhakar's face is quite irritating.. And I also found Radhika's dance movements worse than an amateur.... our opinions differ :)

bb,
iam angry at bharathiraja for NOT picturising certain gems at all, leave alone badly picturising
some of them. the songs include 'putham puthu kaalai' - a real gem, whenever i listen to this song i can easily visualise a lot of scenes in a beautiful village setting, but was shocked not to see the song in the film at all.
thoorathil naan kanda un mugam- a beautiful number by SJ from nizhalgal.
oru kanam oru yugamaaga from nadodi thendral.

"Pani Vizhum Malarvanam" from Ninaivellam Nithya is one particular case. The song is too good. But the picturisation, dance, facial expressions were just horrible. Another such song unbearable to watch : "Poove Sempoove Un Vaasam Varum" - the dance and the dancers in particular :-(

how about 'konji pesu kannamma' from kaadhal kavithai? of all possible situations one could imagine for picturising this song, the director chose to PLAY it during the titles! i was disappointed.
but then, didn't he choose to play 'alai meedhu' from the same movie as a song from someone's walkman?! Reminds me of those tea-kadai scenes where some MGR song is invariably used as the BGM!

This great song is being sung by ThEngAi Srinivasan in the film!!!! I can't imagine. I thought it was Sivakumar. Are you sure? (Just curious:-))) Can you give me some more details about the film?
And one more song that wasn't picturized, "un nenjath thottu sollu en raasa en mel aasai illayaa" from 'Raajaadhi Raaja'.

There are some more melodies with which one might be flabbergasted on knowing the reality of its picturisation with comedy/villain actors
1. oRayiram pArvayilE (vallavanukku vallavan) which is picturised with asokan. I was under the impression that it was picturised with jaishankar untill i saw the song/dance sequences in DD few years back when i was in india.
2. manthirapp punnagai miNNidum mEnagai (maNal kayiru). It has been picturised with SVS and i was laughing my guts when i saw the movie on DD .
