FRIENDS, on Saturday, the 18 th of JULY, 1998, I had been to Doan Paula with some of friends ... Dona Paula is a beautiful spot three kms from Goa Univerisity - this place has a 60 feet high platform from the top of which One can geta breath taking view of the Arabian Sea - while I was loitering at the foothill of the platform, some of my friends had gone up - one of them saw a man wearing a white dhoti and kurta taking snaps of the ocean ... and another recognised him as the Maestro !!!
When approached and enquired thus ,"Excuse me Sir, are you Mr.ILlayaraja ? " , in English,
the man nodded his head and replied in a calm and serene voice, "YEs, I am Illayaraaja"
In return he had enquired about my friend his native place etc.. my friend had also replied well..
When enquired as to what he was here in Goa for, the Maestro had replied " Iam taking photographs of the sea and the beautiful locations here for an inspirational music for a forth comin movie " ...
thereafter a crowd started gathering and he left with his companion ....
Rest in next..

Hi Madhan,
You have indeed lost a wonderful opportunity to talk with the maestro. But in my opinion, IR also lost a chance to meet one of his most loyal and enthusiastic fans.
I just have one question about this whole incident. Why didn't/couldn't your friend inform you that the maestro was standing on top of the platform? Is it too tedious and time consuming or did he just forget about that? What happened?

Dear Nirupama,
My friend first of all was one of those jeeva raasis, who rarely take in interest in movies - in fact, he has seen/heard of IR only once or twice .
The very fact that he recognised IR and decided to talk to him, itself is a miracle !!! So, no wonder, he did not bother to come down and call me.

Madhan:
I know a person who was working as a Hostel attendent in CEG, Guindy. He was very close to KR and once went home to meet IR. As soon as he saw him, he fell at his feet and IR told him that it was not necessary and said that we only have o fall at the feet of God. I personally feel that IR chose to talk to your friend because he was not overwhelmed and must have spoken to him rationally. I believe IR doesn't appreciate people fussing and fawning all over him. He might enjoy a nice round of aanmiga discussion though :-)
I have also heard that IR earned his reputation as an arrogant man because he never used to talk o big-shot directors in a flattering manner. Whenever someone came over, he just used to say 'vanakkam' and go about his work distractedly. Perhaps they felt he was not paying them due(?) obeisance. KB is supposed to have felt very humiliated by one such episode. But IR has made his own mistakes quite a few times. Like once when he argued with SPB during an interview that he brought about a change that improved the TFM scenario whereas current MDs were changing TFM to it's own detriment. however true it might be, I believe that should be a private opinion and not be expressed via a mass communication media like television. It always sends out wrong signals. Another time he argued that anybody could have done what SPB did in 'Mannil indha kaadhal' by trying to sing it himself in an interview and ended up gasping for breath. Of course, it was let out later that portions were clipped together to make that song sound like SPB was singing without taking a breath during the saranams. IR in a lot of ways is still an enigma. Much as I love his music, I would be a little unsure of coming face to face with him. However, hard I try, I know I'll only end up blabbering something meaningless and even now all I can think of is thanking him for giving us countless hours of pleasure !

He didn't mean that actually, what he said was he
has composed many songs like 'Mannil indha'. And
he gave some examples too in that interview. One
song I remember is 'namthana namthana' from
'pudiya vArpugal'. Anyway his comment about SPB
didn't look good though.

MPR, Srinath:
In that interview, IR did not pass a bad comment about SPB. All he said was that he had already composed songs like that before but people did not notice it. The reason that they noticed mannil indha was that it was advertised in the casette
and in the song itself that he is singing without
breathing for 30-40 seconds. He said if they had not mentioned it, perhaps this song would not have been noticed. He quoted another SPB song that was
composed like this. The song was Kanmaniye Kathaal enbadhu karpanayo.

Yeah, now I remember, he didn't say anything
about SPB. But his explanation about other
songs when he was asked about 'mannil intha'
didn't look good.

Just as a correction to SPB's singing "mannil indha" without a breath: It is false. Only two months back I attended a SPB concert and he himself said he does not know how the "singing without breathing" spread; possibly from the movie and to advertise the song. He then demonstrated it, sang it beautifully as in the original and it was obvious he was breathing. Being a public performance, it also obvious that it is also not clippings put to together. The trick is to move the mic away each time a breath is taken - and he did that exactly that. He's a master!
