Hi all,

Pls. help me to prepare some good questions to ask her. Something different. Not like, first song ... awards .. etc. Little different.

Jee, SJ says that she used to listen to Lata and Asha and imbibe the salient qualities of their singing. You could ask her what was the specific aspect of their singing that she implemented, with examples. Extend this question to cover her co-singers as well, like SPB, PBS, TMS, Ghantasala,KJY etc.

Jee:
As her #1 fan (atleast in the DF :-)), I feel the unique quality in her songs is the way she emotes every phrase - on par with, and sometimes even exceeding, SPB's ! I would like to know what she considers as her unique quality ! Also, is she planning a concert in the Eastern U.S sometime in the near future ? Has she ever considered a private album with herself, SPB and IR ?

Ask her why is she not singing in IR's recent albums.

Jee, you find a remarkable difference in SJ's voice during pre and post IR's entry into the tfm. There's an unusual maturity in her voice (by which I mean "munbu irukkum oru kuzhandhaithanam irukkaadhu") which shows in most of the songs that made her popular especially during IR's formative years. I think you understand what I mean. You may ask her if all this was just coincidence or if there was IR's contribution in it! Even though this is more specific, you can ask her in general about IR's role in bringing her talents out, and certain remarkable experiences, incidents related to IR.

Another one, "the most challenging song after singaara vElanE?"
Another one, "Kaalathai Vendravan Nee Kaaviyam Aanavan Nee - singing experience?

The interview (I hate to call it as an interview, most suitable word is a chat session), is basically on S Janaki's work experience with the Maestro Dr. Ilaiyaraaja. There can be some questions in other topics also. I have prepared some 15 questions to ask.
I will post the full transcript in this page.

Karthi, I am sure you have included the last song because that was a duet with P Susheela. KadavuLE yeppO paaththaalum orE aaL mEla craze-a!!!!! As a favor, you can ask Jee to convey thro' SJ your love for PS to PS.
Jee, please do not stick to any particular composer, let the chat be expansive. Let her cover incidents/anecdotes as much as she can.

Jee, whenever you do an interview with any singer, (let it be SJ or anybody else for that reason)who is singing for more than half a century, ask them why they are not retiring and give chances for the new generation of singers.

Jee:
It would be interesting to know her experiences with all great artists like SPB,KJY,IR,ARR,MSV,KVM,TMS,P.leela,Chithra and PS. Also it will be good to hear her opinions about the changing trends in music.
Also ask her what her vocal range is and the number of takes she used to take in average for a song. You may ask her the experiences about the recording of:
(1) ponvaanam panneer thoovuthu
(2) isai arasi ennaaLum naanE
(3) kaatril enthan geetham
(4) kavithai arangErum nEram
(5) rojaappoo aadi vanththu
(6) inji iduppazaga
(7) singaara velanE dheVa
(8) Om namah shivaayaa
(9) azagu malar aada
(10) raasave unnai nambi - a song which every lady singer seems to love.
(11) senthoorap poove
If you do not mind, ask about her experiences in mallu filmdom too where she is most adored :-) There are a few mallu songs of her worth asking about :
(1) SandhyE kaNNEeridhendhE sandhyE
(2) thumbi vaa thumbak kudaththum
(3) thaLiritta kinaakkaL than
(4) yaamini entE swapnangal
Also please ask about her first-encounter-experiences with all the great artists I have listed.

1)Whici is the single most difficult song she has sung so far?
2)"Has she ever got a feeling like,'I should've sung this song'"?
Thanx
Sridhar.

Jee, how can you ask many questions to SJ representing so many people? Will she have so much time? She may have to stay in Bahrain exclusively for couple of days to answer so many queries from diffrent people.I wonder to what extent your exercise is going to be practical. Anyway, good luck!

Jee :
Should a singer sing a song exactly the way the composer wants her to or is she justified in taking liberties with it?
Also, how difficult and different is to sing for an MD who gives the singer a lot of leeway and another who is very particular about his ideas ( absolutely no reference to any one MD :-) ).
Good luck.

Jee,
Smt S.Janaki had mentioned that in the Chat(chennai online)the most difficult song she ever sang was one Kannada song "Shiva Shiva Ennada Naalige Yeke".She has mentioned that "Singara velane deva" was not difficult. Both are classical songs.Could you please ask her Why Kannada song is most difficult song than Singara velane.I think this kannada song is most challenging song after Singara Velane.BEST WISHES.

Meera.

Outlooker,
I am just giving it a try. If this succeeds, I'll be very happy.
Once, you can't ask for a online chat session, we may try this alternative. Get questions from all people, compile it, (In this case, I am gonna take a printout of this page), and ask those questions.
Yesterday's program, I found that Smt. Janaki is very much reliable. Ofcourse, she is very much busy. Still I hope, today she will get sometime to have a chat session with me.
Already lot of questions. I will stop at this point. Whatever questions posted here, I will try to ask her, if time permits. Or else I will ask some selected questions only.

Hey Joe, why not ask her about the trick that she doesn't have the breathing noice while singing, even from the early stages. All the others do have it most of the time. I only noticed her breathing in the song 'thoorathil naan kanda un mugam' (Nizhalhal). May be in few more as well I guess. Apart from SJ only P Susheela manages quite well, not always and these days Chithra is doing her best.
The other thing is the South Indian female artists such as PS and SJ are equally talented as Lata and Asha. But the recognition was not as such. What does she think about that?
Note for OutLook: We don't want people like SJ to retire, that's why they keep singing I guess.

Hi all,
Just wanted to convey this sad news. My chat session got cancelled due to other important appointments of Smt. Janaki.
I was trying to get an appointment for past 5 days. I was assured by organisers, that she may give time for chat. But, suddenly some other appointment came up and Mr. Murali Krishna, her son, personally told me about those appointments and my session cancelled. She was very busy with lot of fans, their families.
Every club (Kannada, Telugu ..) has invited Smt. S Janaki to their club. She was extremely busy for past 4 days. And the organisers also, don't want to give much strain to the legendary singer.
Instead of interview, I will give a broad coverage of her concert. It was a superb concert. Smt. Janaki proved again, she is the queen in concert. Excellent orchestra, sound systems and much more to tell about that concert.
I will post details in my website http://listen.to/ilaiyaraaja. Please wait for 2-3 days.
Outlooker,
UngaLin maru peyar "theerkka tharisiyo" ? (in good sense)
Arambikkum pothE vai vechchitteengalE ? (In lighter sense) ;o)
Thanks for all, who took their time to post questions.

Jee,I feel really sad that ultimately your scheduled interview was cancelled, specially because of the fact that you were very sincere from the bottom of your heart to meet her. I apologize if my postings have made you feel bad.But I am a very practical person and feel that we should not overestimate a situation which may
backfire making you totally depressed. Fans sometime act in a crazy way showing extraordinary enthusiasm and sincerity towards the artists they admire(or let me use the word "worship")but most of the artists do not reciprocate with the same level of frequency. An artist is another human being like any other person who has good points as well as bad points too including weaknesses, ego, jealousy etc. I am not talking about SJ or any particular artist in particular; but it is better always to limit overenthusiam or blind admirations of people just by hearing a voice or seeing in a film.
I wish & I am sure that you will defnitely get another audience wih her as soon as possible. Please excuse me if any of my comment has hurt you.
