With SPB, P Suseela, SJankai reducing the songs, KJY almost out of movie songs I feel that the golden era is over.I dont know how many agree with this.
Since the current lot doesnt seems to be anywhere matching the talent of the above said singers. In my personal opinion, most of Current singers lack the basic qualities of a singer like pronounciation, expressions, clarity, versatality, voice suiting any pitch etc., Please comment on this. Same is happening with all languages.

TFM is like a deserted no man's land without SPB, PS, SJ, JC & KJY.

who said KJY is out of movie songs? do u mean out of TFM scene? that may be true...i don't know...but what i know is, he still rules his home-field, the malayalam film songs scene.
well, the golden era...as u call it...hmm...perhaps its just we are not acknowledging new singers that much. we naturally tend to compare them with the legends...here, they of course fail, cause they are just too 'new' in the field...but i guess when a KJY or a SPB or whoever of the legends exits, then u will start appreciating the 'new' ones.
friends, try to be open for 'new' things, and don't keep sticking to the melancholic old. don't end up crying KJY and SPB were the best, this typical beginning of such sentences 'in those days...', try to be flexible...
but there's nothing wrong in favouring the 'old' ones...

Gone are the days of singers having 30 to 35 years innings with SPB,PS,SJ...etc Enakku therinjavaraikkum 1980s kku after introduce ana singers il 17 varusham top la irukkira ore Singer ALKA YAGNIK dhan....Mattra ellarukkum top position il ALPAYSU dhan

to my knowledge, after TMS, PS, SJ, SPB, KJ, the one singer who played (is still playing?) long innings is Chithra.
Today's singers, even Hariharan, Unni Krishnan, etc., cannot be there even for five years.
The main reason is : the music directors are introducing new voices in almost all the films.
Gone are the days when the hero or heroine had the same voice in a particular film.
(Even in Muthu, SPB and Udit Narayan sang for Rajni and SPB and Srinivas sang for Rajni in Padayappa).
Nowdays, if a flim has five songs, five singers are there. Therefore, we are confused who is singing which song - and it is very difficult for us to recollect the voice when we hear the next song of that particular singer.

The golden era is definetely over. There are lot of qulaity problems with the current singers. Everyone lacks something or other thing. I doubt I can listen Srinivas, Unnikrishnan, hariharan, Harish raghavendra or Udit Narayan's voice after few years. They dont appeal with their voice to me. I mean their voice is not that good that I can keep on listening to them. They are good for one song or other but not many. Thats the reason why I guess current MD's are using different singers for different songs. I hate Udit Narayan's voice when he sings to Rajini. I cant imagine him singing for Kamal which may happen with current trend.
raycas, what is there to acknowledge with the current singers? We are open for new singers but they are failing to impress. When SPB came into field, he impressed people with talents and became legend. Same case with other singers like KJY, SJ,PS etc., There is nothing with the current singers that they impress and can become legends.

u may be right NCR, perhaps the new singers are nowhere compared to SPB,KJY,SJ and so on... and they are also not always good in every song they sing...i think that's the reason why there are so many now... and so many new ones...cause u are not satisfied with one song one of the new singers sang..and bamm..u get the next one...let him try...if he fails, the next one...
well, u call people like hariharan, unnikrishnan 'new'. if my guess is correct unnikrishnan was introduced into filmmusic thru ARR in 'kaadhalan' with the beautiful song 'ennavale adi ennavale', and that was 1994 i guess...so he's there for 7 years now...and i don't think he's gonna disappear so soon...same with hariharan...don't know which one was his first song...but wasn't that he in roja (1992) with 'tamizha tamizha'? (or was that another hariharan?)...so he's also there since atleast 9 years...so those singers are going nowhere...they will be there...
how can new singers impress u when u still stick to ur old SPB and KJY? if these new singers should impress u, they should not only be as good as the legends, but even better...and this is something really difficult and also here lies the problem.
when did chithra come to the film music scene? 1983 i think, is that correct? so compared to SPB and KJY she's rather new, isn't it? but don't we consider her as a great singer? i know i and many million people do so.
the new singers don't need to become legends to impress us...i would be happy if they just sang good (this means the legends sang actually super duper excellant)
anyway, my general opinion is, because of favouring the old (legends) and sinking in melancholic thoughts about their greatness, nowadays one loves to condemn the new singers as good for nothing. and this is not the correct way. that's all. all IMO

The Golden Era of the TFM is Over?
Actually there is no Answer for this ..
Because b/t 50’s & 70’s Production of Movies Were More With Less number Of Technicians
But Currently Production of movies is Very very Less with Humpty number of Technicians
Each one of the Technician is Talented .
So To use them in Every Film is Difficult..
That is y this scenario…
May be Singers From Hindi Film Industry are More in TFM
This is Unavoidable because even in 50’s,60’s Hemant kumar,Raffi,T.A.Moti,Latha,Asha hav sung
That is mainly for Popularity & Difference.
If Production of Movies Are More & Technicians are Used/Utilized Well then Golden Era Can Resume

ARFAN, perhaps in this golden era of asingers you mentioned we have to announce before the song that it is rendered in tamil, so that the audience are not confused by their pronounciations.
This golden era idea is a crap!!

hey guys,
I just listened to the song from Avan Oru Sarithiram by TMS and VJ. The nuancing of "Ammannai" and the following "nai"endings is classic Kannadasan. The singing is par excellence. I was hard pressed to come up with an equivalent by the Hariharan-Sujatha jodi of recent times. The recent crop of singers are technicians, not artistes!

Indhu,
There is also another song in Avan Oru Sariththiram by TMS and VJ. It is "maalai ittaan oru mannan". It is a classic. You can feel that subtle expression of naaNam in VJ's voice throughout the song. And gentle romance in TMS's voice. Also PS's very dignified expression of pride in the song "vaNakkam pala muRai" from the same movie. Gone are those classic days. Do you remember any other song from that movie?

Neel D,
YOu are right, those days are gone. But VJ is still here and I believe the Neela songs (Kannada flick) are very good.
BTW have you seen the VJ thread in this site? There is a guy or girl called AVR who is hell bent on his support of Mangeshar sisters (Asha/Lata) and keep pulling down VJs music/voice for bad pron. You can check it out.
Another VJ fav (she is clear in high pitches - not like SJ that sounds keech keech in hi-notes):
"Kungumakolangal kodhai kondada...." the movie is another Sivaji one: Annan Oru Kovil. I also like the song: "Neerada neram nalla neram porada poovai" from the flick Vaira nenjam. What do you think?
Check the VJ thread for some stupid comments from a mad fan of Lata M. Let me know if you have other faves.

The golden voice of TR Mahalingam, Dr.Sirkazhi Govindarajan, Balamuralikrishna, VJ,SJ are all out today as a result of time.
Even MS Subbulakshmi is not singing today. It does not mean that they are underestimated as out of the field.
We the TFM fans, should get into the mentality of assessing Quality of singing and the song rather than counting numbers or longer useless innings played.

Vani Jairam still sounds as fantastic as ever. Listen to her new release Neela (kannada) with music by Vijaybhaskar. Guess she is too good for Tamil music.
