Malayalam film industry has a good track record of using published novels/Stories.( I don tknow about the songs there)
Tamil film industry has not used pre-written stories/novels much.Thought of discussing the songs in such movies, how well were they fitted in and how the music/songs elevated/brought down the story value.
Thyagaboomi - Kalki- Subramnaiam
Miss Malini -Kothamangalam subbu-Vasan(?)
Gomathiyin Kadalan- Thevan (a TRR starrer)
Thillana Moganambal-Kothamangalam Subbu-APN
Iruvar Ullam -Lakshmi (Penn Manam)-LV Prasad
Sila Nerangalil - JK-Bhimsingh
Oru Nadigai Nadagam paarkiral-JK
Agni Pravesam - JK (Was it released?)
Sirai-Anuradha Ramanan-RC Sakthi
Priya -Sujatha-SP Muthuraman ( sorry to include!)
Gayathri- Sujatha-SP Muthuraman
Ethu Eppadi irukku -Sujatha(Anitha elam manaivi)-SPM
Thikkatra parvathi -Rajaji-Singetham SrinivasaRao
Parthiban Kanavu-Kalki-??(is it ok to include?)
Mogamul-Thi.Ja- Gnanasekaran
Shall we include
Padavikkaga -(Mudalvan)-Sujatha-Shankar
Kallukkul Eeram (Hey Ram)-Ra.Su.Nall perumal-Kamal
In my view Sila nerangalil should rank first as a goos story, good songs in a well made movie, followed by Iruvar Ullam (a run-of-the mill story) brilliantly scripted and directed by LV Prasad.

I understand your view point. But is it not too blunt?
On the lighter vein, how about "Inaithiruntha Iru kudumbangal pirinthu serntha kathai" instead of "Poovellam un vasam",
"Mayilu-Sappani kathai" instead of "Pathinaru vayathinile".

Saravanan -
I simply can't get this song out of my head for the last 48 hours! Don't ask me how I got into this loop :-)It is a wonderful melody and a truly memorable song. Did Thaen Sindhudhe Vaanam also feature "Unnidam Mayangugiraen"? ( I remember as cross-dressing Jai Chitra trying to pass off as a boy-scout or ncc cadet :-))

Actually there should have been Unnidam Mayangugiren right on the top. Unfortunately, it was never completed/released.
Let's see whether anyone else is able to identify the connection. :)

Aalavandhan,
Starting from 'Lakshmi KalyaaNam', each of these films had one song, the first line of which formed the title of the next film in the chain, leading you upto 'unnidam mayangugiRen'!!

Coming back to the topic malai kallan (MGR-Padmini) had story by namakkal kavignar. The movie was also exported to Bollywood as"Azaad" wherin the credits show story by Namaakkal Poet!
Anaal oru sandegam namakkal kavingarin entha kathai athu.. For me it look(s)ed like Robinhood Indianised! As far as I remember azaad is the only movie where meenakumari does not cry from start to finish(An achievement by itself:-).)

Vengayam
It was Bhanumathi. It was one of MGR s best performances.
I had seen her smiling occasionally in "Beju Bhawra" ( I think that was the movie s name- with Bharath Bhushan).
Thuppariyum Sambhu Of Thevan made a token presnece in "Vasan s Motor Sundaram Pillai"

OISG, yes , of course it was Banumathi -only after you pointed out I went to my posting & saw to my amazement that I had typed in padmini.
baiju Bhawravil avanga azhuthirupaanga at least climaxil. the point is she looked pretty cute in a breezy role & not the bloated puffed up meenakumari which we usually see.
nagaS,
Thanks for the info. I did not bring this movie before because I had a suspicion it might only be screenplay.( based on Robinhood)Malaikallan by the way is a PakshiRaaja production isn't it. coimbatore based I suppose! But as age catches up I am not sure anymore:-)

Vengayam, you're right- it was 'Pakshiraja' Sriramulu Naidu's production.

Any ideas about Thevan s works on screen apart from "Gomathiyin Kadhalan" -TR Ramachandran
Who were the other actors in that movie?I would like to know who played "Pranatharthy" the Gingley merchant!!
Oh!Vengayam! The best way to stay young is to be always among older people. So far i have succesfully managed that and this success makes me feel further younger!!

OISG- As a child, I remember seeing 'Thuppariyum Saambhu' serialised on TV- Kathaadi Ramamoorthi played the role.
I love 'Sreemaan Sudharsanam'- that too was serialised on DD with Kaathaadi playing the title role.

Some "Paintal" a written-off Hindi comedian played Sambhu in the hindi version directed by S.Krishnaswamy.Outrageous can be the only word.
Kathadi is another overrated stage comedian. So thevan has never got his credit!!

on: Mon Oct 7 05:39:54 EDT 2002
i think there was a YGM version also on DD. But to be true, Thupariyum sambu is difficult to capture.the asatuthanam has to go hand in hand with innocence & a clear conscience- not difficult to achieve. nagesh did a good take on T sambu in MS Pillai but it is not the same thing.
I'll ge4t back to Gomathiyin kathalan later-i'll tap in on my parents' info on the same.

OISG,
I think Paintal is a famous comedian in Hindi. I doubt he is the brother of Gufi Paintal who played Shakuni in Mahabharat serial (costume designer also of that serial).
Appuswamy story also came as tele-serial - kaathadi as appusamy and Sachu(?) as Seetha patti.
Mannakatti played as Gundu rao.
- From: Venkatesh (@ 212.72.11.66)
on: Mon Oct 7 06:52:08 EDT 2002
typo - read Gundu rao as Beema rao.

Another novel/story serialised was Thenpandi Singam of Kalaignar. Music by IR.
Was there any serial based on Randor Guy's story? RGuy used to make detective stories out of real Kodambakkam mysteries of yesteryears.
- From: OISG (@ 193.188.97.152)
on: Mon Oct 7 08:08:22 EDT 2002
Hindi movies and comedy movies are mutually exclusive terms BUT mean the same when they make serious hindi movies.
Paintal -I dont his first name and hence i put "some".The serial was a mockery and not comedy. As Vengayam pointed out the actor failed to distinguish between innocence and stupidity.
the best in bollywood in comedy will at best match "Sembuli" here.
Randor Guy ,the resident English write for TF...I have read his articles.
Coming back to stories,I wish someone make Rekha Chandranath s "Suzhi Katru".It has a good mystery.(I am not sure whether it was original).Good scope for background score.
How about "Sandilyan" s stories?Ofcourse with the exit of Kushboo his stories lost the chance to be adpated! His social "Mana moham" -well KS Gopalakrishnan has retired too!

Friends,
Talking of TV serials, Sujatha's 'en iniya iyanthiraa (part 1)' with the dog 'jeeno' was made into a TV serial some 14-15 years back!

Someone mentioned Javar Seethraman's udal poruL
Anandhi. This interesting novel was made into a
serial by Raj TV around 1997. I didn't get a chance
to see this serial. But I heard from some friends
that it was not well made!
