It is a long time since Swarnalatha started to sing film songs, that too in IR's music and till today, she has done a remarkable job. Her first song, incidentally is in 'Chatriyan', a Vijayakanth starrer, where she did a brilliant job in 'maalayie yaaro....', the whole scene pictured really well in Andamans, with Banu at her seductive best.

immediately reminds me of chinna thambi and dhalapathi. BTW, isn't it swarnalatha who sang "ennulle ennulle" from valli??

hi KA,
I think swarna's first song is with MSV.This was told by her in an interview. But she gained popularity among the masses after kshatriyan.

I remember that she was introduced by IR though some "Kannamma" song - a lullaby of some sort. I think Nizhalgal ravi and Radhika starred in that film.

Murali,
The song you are referring to is perhaps Chinnan chiru kiliye kannamma (based on Bharathiyar song) from the film "Needhikku Dhandanai". I dunno if the female playback for it was Swarnalatha, if it was, then it tallies with what Shankar has said above - that she was introduced by MSV.

Swanalatha was introduced by MSV in 'chinnanjiru kiLiyE' from neethukku thandani. It was a cute tune by the mellisai mannar.. very different from the traditional tunes for that song. I thought the first major hit for swarna was 'aatama thErOttamA' from Captain P.

I thought the first major hit of Swarna
was the song from Kshthriyan ...

Maargazhi vaadai medhuvaaga veesa ...

Bhaskar: I am not sure just about the temporal ordering of the songs. I am not disputing the fact that both were big hits. :-). Though 'aatamA' was a bigger hit if you go by the number of times you got to hear it when taking a walk in the streets. :-)

the best 5 of ir-swarnalatha
1. ennulle ennulle - valli. swarnalatha will never get to sing another song like this in her lifetime.
2. maalayil yaaro-chathriyan
3. maasi maasam - dharmadurai
4. aatama- captain prabhakaran
5. kuyil paatu - en raasavin manasile

it is disappointing that IR who once gave immortal numbers like 'ennulle ennulle', 'maalayil yaaro', 'kuyil paatu' 'maasi maasam' etc. to swarnalatha is not using here effectively now. i used to love swarna's voice and songs even more than chithra's at one point of time. her voice sound divine in ennulle ennnulle. its a pitt that she has been misused by other MD's and not used at all by IR.

Listened to MVU for the first time yesterday. My choice of all songs is the number featuring Swarnalatha - the way she sings the sentence `Panneer maram, poo pooththathu' - wow!

IR's many recent numbers that were generously awarded to his daughter Bhavadharini would have sounded divine had Swarna sung them. Imagine 'Aadisivan ThOlirukkum Nagamani' by Swarna.
Even a bit-song in Thevar Magan sung by Swarna & chorus was rendered with that professional touch.
Also, she is IMO the only South Indian playback singer who can render songs in Hindi without the slightest accent. And as is the case with HFM, she hasn't been recognised at all, in spite of such hits like Ranageela and Indian. Probably the fact that us South Indians lack the glamour & hype and are pathetic when it comes to PR is responsible for this.
I remember once Swarna said in an interview that Lata Mangeshkat had all praise for her rendition of "Raakkamma Kaiya Thattu".
Wonder why the likes of IR and ARR aren't using this talented young lady's voice any more.
Even some one like Devi (who IR introduced and who has sung some beautiful numbers in the film 'Oru Oorile Oru Raajakumari')has a very melodious voice and is grossly under-utilized by the MDs.
By the way, it's the sad version of 'POrale Ponnuthayee' (MD: ARR) that got her the National Award.

she is a talented singer, no doubt. But the
muqbala muqbala song, changed her career upside down, and she is increasingly getting l.r.easwari tyoe of songs

e.hari,
Forget LR Eswari lind of songs... there AREn't ANY coming to Swarna. By the way, I have great regard for LR Easwari. Her style is unbeatable. Her 'Paarvai Ondre POduma'... 'Hello My dear Wrong number' are unique numbers, which only the likes of LRE could've done justice to .
Well, Swarna's versatility is mind-blowing. Be it a 'Muqabla' or 'Akkada', or a 'Maalayil Yaro', she's never ill-at-ease. She's sung a real good soft'n'slow song, "Oru Naal" in 'Anthi Mandaarai'. What amazing clarity in rendition!

Rex,
I just listened to UNNAI ETHIRPAARTHEN. It's of the same class as 'Maalayil Yaro'.
In fact, the song was a pleasant surprise, as all along I thought, it was one number I heard some time ago, "Unnai Vidamaattten, Kaadhal Varam Ketpen".. which I found to be quite uneasy to my ears.
This song springs surprises throughout: the initial hum, the chorus, the interludes aand finally, the introduction of the male voice!!!
It's a real cool number. Thanks Rex.

I think of him as a substitute for VJ. Both of them has got national awards. But, nowadays, I think MDs are using her for dappanguthu songs like what happened to VJ earlier.
