Hi friends!
I think this will be a different topic all together. I don’t know if a similar topic had come before. Any way let us take a break from the usual music related topics.
I have always been fascinated by the genres of movies that Hollywood produces. Action, thriller, horror, science fiction and so on
But that thing is surely missing in tamil movies nowadays. Same action, love, and formula movies. What about the horror movies.
The movies like “Andhi Varum Neram,13 number Veedu ,Amaavasai Iravu are all gone and there are no genuine efforts now.
Why our producers are not indulging in those efforts. Is it due to lack of viewers, risk factor or any other reasons.
Please discuss..

"horror" in Hollywood? hehe when did that happen?
the movies that hollywood churns out in the name of horror is absolute crap! Nothing in comparison to Omen, Shining! And this is their standard, with the Stephen (King) of Horror in their country.
anyway, threadkku varuvom. being a horror-freak, ive seen all those movies that music-man mentioned..but they are pretty pathetic. u can see them for a few good laughs - kinda like that serial Geetanjali on Raj TV!

sneha without make up would be still very beautiful. (check her out in non-song sequences in Parthiban Kanavu - ie the wife's role).

Yes I know these are some pathetic films. In particular the film "Amaavasai Iravu" is a frame by frame copy of an Hollywood horror flick".My view is not even that type of effort is taken in TFM now.
Meanwhile plz share ur details of other non english horror movies.
Thanks for the response.

Vaa Arugil Va is one - inspired from Child's Play.
Pagalil Pournami: This has to get the award for the most confusing movie ever. Not because the plot is convoluted..but coz the director didnt know which genre to follow. In the 1st half you have Sivakumar fighting some baddies and this main villain swears revenge in the future..but he never comes in the movie after that.
2nd half is about a haunted hotel and this "ghost" which kills married couples. I think Hanifa also stars in this crappy movie.
Uruvam: starring Mohan (without a meesai). pretty ok. (ie by the normal standards)
My Dear Lisa: Another movie in the typical girl-dies-takes-revenge-as-ghost genre.
A few kannada movies:
Shhh: the movie was pretty scary and "adult-contented". :)
Anant Nag movie with Lakshmi (i think). Have forgotten the title, but had some scenes ripped off from Exorcist. but still a watchable movie.
Raat (hindi): absolutely pathetic. supposed to have some advanced sound effects..very dull!

I think pagalil pournami was directed by Haniffa himself. It had music by IR. I thought the BGM was very haunting during the ghost scenes.

Thakkali Srinivasan also did music along with his friend, for some films that he produced. He was the "srini" in the "premi-srini" music director duo. One of those films was Nalaiya Manithan. I think it was a remake of a Chuck Norris starrer "Silent Night".

>> I thought the BGM was very haunting during the ghost scenes.
Was the "haunting" supposed to be a pun? Coz as far as I can remember, there was absolutely nothing remotely good in the movie (incl the music). And I had no clue that it was by IR. Pretty lousy it was.

I think the movie “DHURUVA NATCHATIRAM” is a slight adaptation of “OMEN”
How about the movie “EVIL DEAD”. None mentioned about it. Actually one part of it was really frightening and the other part was made a joke and the last part was ruled the skeletons. They really spoiled the plot.
The music of “EVIL DEAD-PART III”, I’ve heard it somewhere in one particular movie or any particular serial.
Being a horror movie freak I’ve too watched many horror movies in my school days and now when I see them nothing seem to frighten me. Can any one give details about other language horror flicks (like French, German…) Do they really produce these kind of stuff. ??

Tamil cinema never had as many Horror movies to cherish like Evil Dead, Halloween, Nightmare.. is for Hollywood. The only decent movie I could think of is Uruvam. The music, the suspense, the locations were actually very good and I think it was better than any Horror movie that came in Tamil before or after. I think for this genre to succeed in Tamil Industry, people should give importanec to all aspects of filmmaking as much as they would do for a an average Tamil movie. Horror movies here lack something or the other like poor casting, poor acting, reused ideas, stereotype characters (like a very reclusive old man/old woman), insane "college students", people fear a lot, white saree (and of course a "theme song"), songs that you probably is not interested to listen etc.)
Horror movies that have a good original story, without being very emotional and some good acting will always find audience. To give an example, take the movie July Ganapathi, If the story were to be modified such that saritha was a ghost, it would appeared very unique Horror movie. The acting in that movie was good and with this change it would be a Horror movie with a professional touch.
Of all the Horror movies I have seen in English, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Japanese the best I have seem probably would be the The Ring (English) + Ringu (japanese)

Can't forget "The Others" which had one of the best twists in the climax. In tamil "Jenma Natchathiram" and "Yaar" were good.
