  This topic is an offshoot of the IR's love for violin topic. Some time back myself and two friends were trying to come with songs in which IR doesn't use the violin or the flute. We could think of just one: en kanmani en kaadhali from chittukuruvi. ungaLukku vERa ethaavathu theriyumA. Forget songs from Sindhu Bhairavi etc.. where the scene prevents him from using the flute or violin.. mEdaila violin, mirudhangam and thambura mattum irukkum pOthu engErnthu flutea use pannuvathu?

  dEv: I was actually thinking of songs that use neither a violin nor a flute. :-). vaaraandi vaaraandi is one. This thread expired before the I heard that song. :-).

  there are quite a number of IRs songs without tabla. In that case the song will use the western drums and often accompanied by guitar.

  Aatama Therotama from Captain Prabakharan does not have tabla, what a catchy and creative tune. Flute I think is used in the first interlude.

  If I remember correct, all the songs in
  "Agni Natchathiram" had no tabla at all...
  they had only drums....
  
  Also, the song 'Vaanengum thanga vin.." from
  "Moondraam Pirai" had no tabla..
