Not sure whether this has been discussed..Most often then not, some songs make me wonder what the music directors were thinking when casting payback singers...some of their choices were evidently unsuitable for the songs...1 recent example would be "vatta vatta nizhavu" from "thennavan" by unni menon & another lady singer...
unni was good as usual but the lady was a wrong choice...by the way, was she bavatharani??
hope we discuss more of such songs where the greatness of a song deteriorated due to wrong choice of playback singers!!!
contrary to popular believe udit do sounds ok for certain songs...in other songs, he is a total washout!!

YSR tends to have bad choice when it comes to female singers. Some of the singers in Kadhal Samrajyam and Punnagi Poove were horrendous.
YSR has introduced a couple of new singers who are not too good either.
Sharmila - New spb song in Thennvan
Padmalata- Vatta Vatta
Pavithra - Bombay City
Prasanthi - Koli from Winner ( with Udit)!!!!
Prasanna - Azhagaana Aangal.
At least we should be greatful he is not using Bhavaa any more!

Though I am a big fan of IR, I feel that he used SJ for too many songs which Chitra or sujatha or swarnalatha or uma ramamnan could have sung better.

Mr.x, I second your opinion. Very true about what u said. I too felt, at many instances, that many other singers would have done a better job compared to SJ.

s.janaki is the queen in the music reign of ilaiayaraja......dont degrade the talents of that living legend and isignani!
as in the yesteryears.....like MSV,TMS & PS...it is ilaiayaraja,spb & s.janaki today.
none other singer can even just follow the traces of janakiamma!
mr.X and ravi try to listen to the melody and musical moments of them.
she had never gone behind any music director for chances and songs.
her humbleness, honesty& dedication to music had made her the unbeatable melody queen of south indian film music world!
viewers like urself and even myself have no ability and capacity to give a certificate for janakiamma......it is even those singers u had mentioned had praised that they are the fans of s.janakiamma!
she had not only sung in the music of isaignani.......she is even doing her best in the music of a.r.rehaman , vidyasagar,sirpi,barani,deva,.....today!
the md's who had used s.janakiamma would be a very big list to mention(this count may be equal to the no of songs...that new amateur singers are singing now)
janakiamma is now getting older and now she is taking rest.she is spending her time by going for saibajans, devotional music, chatting with her fans, playing with her grand daughters......
if she happened to read ur words ....what would that great legend think it of!
so plz....we dont need any certificate for her from u!
it was the music directors,co-singers,directors, and the govts which had recognized her service to music and last but not the least the crores and crores of her fans!!!!!!.

I'll second u sri..but definately the exposure was more for janakiamma..the most wanted pair in the glorius 80's were beyond doubt spb & janakiamma..just like tms & ps suheela for the 60's..1/2 of 90's maybe for mano & chitra..
as for Ir, Janakiamma was the preferred female playback..

Sri, I never doubted her humbleness, honesty and dedication. But what we are talking about is the favourism she got from IR and what I had posted in absolutely my opinion and cannot be claimed to be a universal truth (because people's opinions do differ)!

Sri, Janaki is one of my alltime favourites and I didn't not say anything bad about ability. It's the fact that IR used her for lot more number of songs than other female singers. The reason could be bcos she is the most versatile singer. A few of her songs with SPB, which I don't quite remember now could have been sung by others. It's just that when I hear it, I feel that way. Like Ravi said, it's just my openion.
