There are so many lousy movies (esp. Ramarajan starrers) became a commercial hit just because of Raaja's songs. On the other hand are there any failures inspite of excellent songs from him? The ones I can think of is
Kadhal Oviyum - people expected more from Bhartiraja.
Ninaivellam Nitya - Sridhar's famous love touch failed to impress the audience
??????? - this one a Suman starrer had 3 good songs. Dhagam edukkira neram - Uma R,
Pani vizhum - Deepan C & a female voice ,
O Nenjame - singer not known. your input pl.

  There are plenty of movies which failed inspite
  of good/excellent music from Raja.
  I can think of nadodi Thendral.
  The song Yaarum Vilayadum Thottam is a
  masterpiece. Also this movie had a wonderful
  BGM.
  
  There is a movie from Bharathan (Think it was
  his first movie in Tamil with vineeth as Hero.)
  It had good music.
  
  Gopura Vasalile -- This movie had great songs.
  My aural senses attain their orgasm when I listen
  to Thalattum Poongatru Naan Allava,
  All the songs in that Movie are gems. But I dont
  think the songs were commercial hits.
  
  Puthu Nellu Puthu Naathu -- Another flop from
  Bharathi Raja had nice songs. Poopoo and
  Karutha Machan... But the movie was a
  disaster.

  Kamal's RajaParvai
  These movies flopped inspite of excellent

  "aavaaram poo" is the Bharathan movie.
  
  Isn't gopura vaasalile a hit? I remember seeing its

  Bharathi Raja's PUDUMAIPEN, despite its flop, has good songs (idu oru kaadal mayakam, Kasturi maanae). Eththanai Konam, Eththanai Paarvai - Jaykantans' movie, has good number of Raja's tunes (eg. Alai Paayudae Kanna). I don't remember the movie but the song Thalayai Kuniyum Thaamarayae in RidhiGowla ragam is Raja's master piece. Manipoor Maamiyaar - a never released movie has good number of songs especially the one sung by Malaysia Vasu in CS Jayaramans voice.

  Chandrasekar, tht was Aanandha Thenkatru Alai Payuthe....by Malaysia and shailaja.
  What about Nizhalgal ? In stricter terms, it was a flop and had great songs.Let me add some movies and songs. Pls confirm their hit/flop status, if possible, as I really do not know.
  1. Kannil Theriyum Kadhaihal......Naan oru ponnoviyam by spb, psusheela, chorus
  2. There are good songs (2) in Nadhiyai Thedi Vandha Kadal
  3. How about Poonthalir? I think it was a flop. Vaa pon mayile and Naan Naan are good songs and vaa pon mayile being one of Raja's best.
  4. Have you guys listened to "Yetho Ninaivuhal" a great song from Agalvilakku sung by Yesu and shailaja? Was Agalvilakku a hit at that time?
  i have a good list of old ilay's movies, i'll name a few. Can u give the songs? Just try to recollect the songs from them.

  A good song from Vetrikku Oruvan is "thOranam aadidum medaiyil naayagan naayagi", a very good
  song sung by TMS/SJ. This film was probably the
  first of Raaja's for Sivaji. It has a good BGM too.
  
  In poottaatha poottukkal, there is another good number "vanna vanna vannap poonjochalaiyil.." sung

  Ennagakku Kkathiru was a landmark achiemvemnt of Raja. The song 'O Nenjame" has to date one of the finest and the strongent orchestral accompaniment in Indian film song music as stated by one of the music critics. While the voice of Deepan was appropriate he messed up with false notes not only in that song but also that other mystical number "Pani mazhai vizhum" This movie was totally different from any of Raja's attempt before and after. I don't understand why he did not attempt that style again.
  
  To one of the queries: Valibame Vaa Vaa had an upbeat number by KJY: Kanne Balam Thannaal Vandhadhu Kadhal Kadhai... Sonnadhu, Kalai mamaniye etc.. (sorry, I don't know the exact words.
  
  But, hey anyone knows the whereabout of these spectaculars (the name of the movie?)
  
  'Theyn sumandha pillai naana, Vaanavillin pillai naana' SPB and this song has one of the most pleasing rhythms I have ever heard.
  
  'Kalangal Mazhaikalangal' MV and SJ in one old film.
  
  'Nenje Unn Aasai enna, Nee ninaithal aakathathu enna' It has a great duet: Sugam sugame, thoda thoda thaane MV and VJ

  Ilayaraja gave excellent songs to Bharathiraja for his films. But I donno for what reasons he rejected Raaja's Music after his "Nadodi Thendral". Is there any misunderstanding between them?

  Nineties (90's) saw many glorious efforts of Raaja being washed out by the great tide of ARR/Deva/SAR/Sirpi/Vidhyasaagar combination.
  To name a few,
  "Paatu paadava" had great songs like "Nil **3", "Poongaatru", "Vazhi vidu ** 3", "chinna kanmanikulle" and Nandhavana theru also had some lilting songs like "Velli nilave" , "VIRALIL SHRUTHI MEETAVAA", "enna varam vendum".
  "Raajakumaran " - "Sithagathi pookalae" ,"Chinna chinna solleduthu" , "Kaatilae kamman kaatilae", "Ennavendru solvadhamma"
  "Poonthottam" had one of the all time greats of Raaja "Meetaadha oru veenai" in Reethigowlai, "Vaanathu thaaragaiyo", "iniya malargal pookum" set to Chakravaaham
