Aruvi,
> what was so great about "Sindhu Bhairavi" and "Mudhal Mariyaadhai" songs?
May I ask you what was so great about Chithra's singing "mari mari ninne" or "kuzhaloodhum kannanukku"? If writing lyrics as in SB or MM is no big deal, then singing songs or composing music is also no big deal. IMO, mastering a language like Thamizh is a greater gift from God than a sweet voice or abundant knowledge in music. Of course, VM may sound arrogant but to deny him of any credit for all his good lyrics and services to Thamizh is not correct. I'm no big fan of VM but I certainly respect him for some of the very good lyrics he has written.

Your right. Anyone can sing those songs. But I like Chithra's voice and her singing was great. Likewise, anyone can write for SinduBhairavi or MM. It is not the fact that he was able to that I asked about. I have listened to MM, and I don't see how the song 'raasave' became such a great hit. I never said his lyrics weren't altogether good either. It's just that if you look at most tamil songs, for which VM has written, the creativity is not there. He just repeats the basic stuff again and again. If he wants to all that he says he wants to to the tamizh community then why doesn't he come up with something better. Or does he have to wait for 2 years again to see that as well?
But then, I am going to stop the argument right here because I don't know about VM that much, other than having listened to his songs. I never denied him any credit. I just don't see why there is such a hype for him considering things.

aruvi:
He just repeats the basic stuff again and again
Please substantiate. I know a lot of songs in which VM has proved he has very good imagination. But please back your arguements with examples.

You would have to wait a long time for me to bring examples from songs. Take basic lines from most songs and you can see that basically the meanings and in a lot of songs the words are similar. Again, it is possible. I wasn't talking just for the heck of it. I remember listening to a lot of songs from the late 80's and wondering why they all have the same lyrics. But I don't understand how you can say that most of his songs are creative. I do know that he does have his share of really good creative songs, like his first song, and then Raja paarvai songs, and the likes. Especially the Charanam. But take his sad songs and you would also see that in the pallavi, there would be repetition. One song that had many forms is in I think Velaikaaran, where Rajni sings about his dead mother. A lot of songs have had bits of pieces from that song adapted to themselves. I will come back sometime during my break with the examples. You would have to wait till then.

To VM's credit, I love that song 'Ithu oru pon mazhai(eden, is that right?:-))'. It's really great. Another song of his I like is(I think it's his) 'Siragilai naan kuyil illai' by Chitra in Vaaname ellai. Both these songs are very optimistic and the lyrics are well done and quite different in approach though they are dealing with the same subject.

Did'nt he reuse "Amudha Illai Vishama illai amudha vishama" in two songs .. One I remember is from Duet, and the other I'm not sure (Probably Vanuyarntha Solaiyile).

Essential VM for the forgetful minds:
-Enakkaaga Kaathiru: Thaagam edukkira neram, Oh nenjamae, panimazhai vizhum--vintage VM stuff.
-Kaadhal Oviyam: except Kuyilae by Panchu, all other songs were by VM--sangeetha jaadhi mullai, nadhiyil aadum poovanam, poojaikkaaga, poovil vandu koodum, vellich chalangaigal...
-Alaigal Oyvadhillai: "Aayiram Thaamarai mottukkalae" one is enough to highlight this soundtrack, but there were other tasty ones.
-Aaraadhanai: ilam pani, oru kungumach chengamalam...pudhukavidhai virundhu endru sollalaam.
-kann sivandhaal mann sivakkum: manidhaa manidhaa--a socialist anthem!
I don't have the time to list each and every song in VM's pre-algorithm days but give the man his due and listen to these soundtracks if you haven't before or just managed to forget:
-ninaivellaam nithya, paalaivanach choalai, sigappu malli, amma, mann vaasanai, kadaloarak kavidhaigal, pudhukkavidhai, kannoadu kann.

Udhaya, add "PayanangaL Mudivadhillai" to your list. Also, I believe, 'aayiram thaamarai mottukkaLae" was by Kannadasan and the rest of the songs in "AlaigaL oyvadhillai" was by VM. I'm not sure, though.

aruvi!
I'm sorry, you're incorrect (again)...:-)
`mazhai' is rain
`mAlai' is evening, namma KSC language'l sonnAl, `sandhya':-)
The song goes like this: `idhu oru pon mAlaippozhudhu' (`this is a great evening' is a rough translation)
SM!
I'm 100% sure `Ayiram thamarai' is by VM; `kaL vadiyum pookkaL thangaL kAmbai maRakkum':-) (kaL is VM's TM!)

I thought this forum is to bring out what IR thinks about VM or vice versa and the reasons for separation. But it seems like you are talking about VMs lyrics list under IRs MD.

Eden, in my eagerness to get the word correct, I got carried away. I know that they are both different. My mind was thinking something and my fingers something else. But really, I do know that 'mAlai' is evening and 'mazhai' is rain. Honest!

At present The Best Lyric Writer in Tamil is Vairamuthu! No doubt in that!
and like that The Best Music Director in India (or world.. hee ...hee..) is the Maestro Illayaraja . There also no doubt in that!
As both are fighting nowadays will not mean that Illayaraja is thinking Vairamuthu has no stuff or VM thinks that IR is not good. I am sure in their heart IR know how talented VM is like that VM will not have doubt that IR is the ultimate.
The problem is because of their personel problems or ego not because of each other's talents!
Both are just trying to show their anger towards each other by commenting on each others talent.
Till now, I am sure the best songs of Vairamuthu has come only under the music of IR and like the same most of the IR songs nowadays will be much much better if they had the lyric from VM.
Actually ,
It is a great loss for IR that he is not having VM and greater loss to VM that he is not able to write under IR's music.
And ofcourse the Greatest loss is to ...us!!!

Is there any remote possibilty of their uniting in future?
IMO Vairmuthu is a very open kind of a man. OTOH, I think Ilayraja is very reserved type. He is a man of few words. It still surprises me on how people who were together right thro' the difficult times could forget their memories and come over to open fighting. surprising....
I love the mixture of words vairamuthu uses even in his normal speech. His speeches are generally very inspirational. Some people tend to take it in the other sense, but I find very few using(or at least trying) the clean speech even in public appearances. The other person I can recall is kamalhaasan. Nowadays there is slight mix of routine speech in him,but he still tries to maintain a clean speech. Is there anybody else in this industry who speak thamizh as thamizh and not as tameel or tamilu. Another name that I get reminded is P.C.Ramakrishna. Sorry for deviating, but felt like telling, thats all.
