Illayraja was rated highly. because he had the ability to give compose more than few good songs in a single movie. I didn't go for the 3 or more good songs scale as this page won't be enough. He did most of these works in 80s some in late 70s. I might have left out a few.

  isaiosai, that's an awesome song! So is 'Amudhe Thamizhe'. I haven't heard 'Sangeethame...' though. So that's it? Just 3 songs in Koyil Puraa?
  
  Is 'Vedham Nee Iniya Naatham Nee' the only song that uses the raaga Gowlai? Does anyone know where else that raaga exists? It looks like a very difficult scale to play. [I suppose, all you film MDs out there who would like to experiment with something new and different could try to compose another song in Gowlai. It seems like it could work, huh?]

  Yes x of course.
  I sure would love to share my singing interest with anyone else interested. Afterall what else are these forum facilities for. I am still not successful in getting hold of some songs. Once collected I will send them to Chennai for studio recording. They charge 16,000 rupees for a recording of ten songs' track (minimum quantity it seems).

  Folks:
  
  Some of you youngers may have qualms about hey.. what are these..I hever heard about...
  
  Yup ! It is too sad those of you who haven't heard really miss them..Even folks of my generation missed many of these, since these weren't always p
  layed in big cities..It is the folks in villages had an amazing time listening to these..at times like Mariyamman Thiruvizha..Kaliyamman Pongal...village weddings..Kadhu Kuthal function..Kannu Kuthal function and that sort of things..I am so delighted to have born in a village to have the opportunity to hear these over and over again...It is no overstatement that if you happen to catch a guy from village in late 30s or 40s..most likely he will remember these..
  
  IR literally shut down the Hindi songs or for that matter many of other music directors sings..with the exception of a few..during this time period. Even outstanding MSV songs were sidelined.. Atleast Madras 2 channel in late night broadcasts used to play so aptly the great MSV songs..
  
  IMHO, I do not think that even IR can recreate the spontainity and impromptu compositions like these songs now..he was composing songs like was possessed by something.

  Anyway, to throw light on those Rajini *ers you had in question, here's my take.
  
  Garjanai- I believe there are 5 songs:
  
  1. Varuvaai Anbe (TKS Kalaivanan & S. Janaki)
  2. Enna Sugamaana (MV & UR) - a personal favorite
  3. Oru Ooril Oru Maharani
  ... and there is also 1 more duet and a solo by VaniJayaram.
  
  Aarilirunthu Aarupathu Vaarai- dunno. The statistics at RaajaNGAHM say that this film has 3 songs. The biggest hit is 'Kanmaniye Kaathal Enbathu'.
  
  Murattu Kalai- there are 4 songs:
  1. Entha Poovilum
  2. Puthiya Vannangal
  3. Annanukku Jai (Pothuvaaga Manasu...)
  4. Maaman Machchaan
  
  Naan Potta Savaal- unsure. RaajanGAHM says 4 songs.
  
  Unfortunately, Mr. Ravi, I must consent to your last statement... even IR cannot recreate the spontaneity and impromptu compositions... Although his recent 'En Mana Vaanil' and 'Solla Marantha Kathai' have their share of good songs, I'm sure they can't live up to the likes of 'Kallukkul Eeram', 'Koyil Puraa,' 'Thanga Magan', etc.
  
  Surely in the 90s, IR has come out with wonderful albums such as 'Aranmanai Kili', 'Avarampoo', Raman Abdullah', 'Pappayude Swantham Appoose (Mallu)', 'Boomi Geetha (Kan)', etc. And today's IR does not even live up to those compositions. All IMO.

  In other Indian languages nowadays IR seems to be doing better. Just look at his recent Kannada and Malayalam compositions, such as 'Boomi Geetha', 'Usire', 'Gulabi' (recently dubbed into Tamil as Kaathirupen Kaathaliye), 'Friends', 'Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal', etc. At least these albums retain at least 70 percent of the class IR displayed in his 70s and 80s works. SOrry if I'm digressing too much from the topic. ;-)

  Does anyone know where i can listen to 'prema raga hadu gelati', kannada movie by IR in '99-'00? I watched this movie on screen, don't remember nothing about the songs, though was awestruck by the BGM. The heroine is dumb and uses Iktara - single stringed bowed instrument of Indian origin also known as 'Single-String Lute' to communicate.

  For your info :
  Sangeethame from Kovilpura is the only song available in the rarest of rare raaga RasikaRanjini. There is even dearth of Carnatic songs in this Raaga.

  purv, yes. "neelakkuyilE unnOdu thaan" from magudi is also in rasika ranjani.
