Synopsis of findings : Part I
1.Carnatic singers prefer to prefix their name with their native place.Gazal singers dont.
2.Gazal singers(Hindustani singers) prefer the Ustad prefix where as Carnatic singers do not prefer to prefix titles like "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" etc
3.The carnatic singers list include Dr where the gazal singers list include Pt.
4.Carnatic list has the "Priya sisters" where Gazal (Hindustani) females prefer to sing alone.
5.While everyone alive(listed) stand a chance to sing in AR rehmans music none of the gazal (Hindustani) singers stand a chance to sing in IR's music.

Pithukuli Murugadas, as the name suggests sang mostly on Lord Muruga. His "Pachaimayil vaganane "was a regular AIR bakthi padal. He sang in Devarin " Deivam" movie (Swami malai padal).

yah, I meant "pithukuli" Murugadas, but he often had his own way of singing, he often changed the raaga's slightly @ pallavi's, which KJY, BMK never do!

Neel D:
Is Vani really a professional Carnatic singer - i.e. has she regularly conducted pure Carnatic concerts? I have enquired in quite a few leading music stores and there seem to be no tapes of her pure classical performances. I dont think she can be put into the list of pure Carnatic/Hindustani classical singers then. I guess, singing classical songs in films would be very much different from conducting a pure classical concert - and that too regularly, not just one or two concerts, which becomes an exception and not the rule.
Whether her name should feature in pure Hindustani classical singers - I dont think so again. About ghazal singing, I havent heard anyhting more than Parvaaz. Which again does not make her a complete ghazal singer (to be put into the league of Msdhurani,Ghulam Ali, Hariharan, Mehndi hassan etc.)
Do correct me if I am mistaken!

VJ is a singer trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music (training period over 2 decades). However, singer who make their debut in film playback singing seldom get to traverse the "classical" arena with ease. This might have something to do with the perceived "corruption" of film music. Asha and Lata are also classical trained Hindustani singers but they have not been known to give "full" hindustani concerts. AB is at ease with "ghazals" and LM excels in "devotionals". Neither of them (and VJ)lacks anything that a "pure" carnatic/hindustani singer may claim to have. But they have to work within a "commercial" parameter (film music). Balamuralikrishna did not get too familiar with "film music" - as his reputation was made in "classical" singing. KJY had done the genre crossing - carnatic/film playback - but he is still considered (predominantly) to be a "film" musician.
The difference lies in the pre-determined genre/school where an artiste makes her/his claim. It does not necessarily mean or say anything about the artiste's cross-genre abilities. It is just market-placement, in commercial terms.

similarly is the name of KS CHITRA justified in the category of pure carnatic singers?

I think the discussion is drifting towards-Who should be added to the two groups and where.
I think the comparison ,as rightly pointed out earlier,is tring match two distinct colours of music ,the result of which is going please none.( I assume that Raghu meant Hindustani music while starting this thread.Gazal in itself cannot be a music category)
If someone can really bridge the gap today it is ARR.I expect an ARR coup with an Abyankar-Sowmya duet in " Boys"

OISG - Categorisation was, I believe, part of the prelude to this thread: The "Merger" list above. One genre - and the other a sub-genre. No wonder this thread in the throes of an identity crisis... :-)
BTW: Ithukkuthana Asaipattai... was an interesting "film" memoir, but a bit heavy on the predictable Balakumaranisms. How's it going with him and his writing these days? Have you read any of his work lately?

These days Balakumaran is mainly into movies and has left "Tamil Ilakkiyam" in peace.
I think he should be III in the list after Crazy and Sujatha on the preference list for the Dialogue writers.Whenever i get the temptation to read i take Pachai vayal manathu again .The news from Chennai is that he has exhausted all Thi.Jaa novels.Lets hope that he does not become "Rayapettai Balu" again.
Coming back to the thread, someone like Neyeli Santhana Gopalan or Seshagopalan himeself could have been tried for songs like "Kannil Varum Katchi yellam".It had both the Bhajan style and the sufi style (both being sub categories).
Sriram Gangadharan, i hear , is trained in Hindustani too.A good voice for TFM.

>>Pleaseeeeee Ghazal singers and Hindustani Musicians are not one and the same!

ZOHRA KHAN must be a Southie, because (a)he uses the word "please" (that too twice) in his mail, and (b)the short message is correctly formatted without any gram.mistake.
.
On the other hand, he may be a Northie, because he has failed to realize Raghu's calling Hindustani songers Gazal singers was only (really) toungue-in cheek; a bait.
.
howver i vote for the first premise.
