Hi All,
I dont know anything about carnatic music but from various articles in the internet i could know which song was based oin which raaga.I found that 75% of my fav songs are based on "MOHANAM".For example geetham sangeetham, ninnukori varnam, nilavu thoongum neram, kanmaniye kathal enbathu, idhayam oru kovil etc etc...are all my top fav's..
So can everybody tell which raaga is their favourite and quote some songs...

I am hearing another Aarabhi based song, by Mr. Ravindran (a Malayalam song) called 'Ithire Naanam' from the (unreleased?) film Thammil Thammil. What a song!!! I'm not saying that the raaga alone makes a song great, good, mediocre or bad, don't misunderstand me. It's just that we may tend to gravitate towards songs if they are based on a certain raagam; some of us gravitate towards Aarabhi or Mayamalavagowla rather than Keeravaani or Darbari Kanada, or vice versa. Remember, there are thousands of people, thousands of different tastes and thousands of different ragas. The possibilities are countless. :-))

Purv,
Pahadi means "related to mountain" (pahad means mountain in Hindi). This raga creates a unique feeling of being surrounded by mountain breeze when you hear it. it goes like our Mohana ragam with the scales of Nishadam (Kakali) and Madhyamam (Sudha) in Avarohana. Mohd Rafi has innumerous songs in Pahadi like Jo Vada Kiya.., Chahunga Mein Tujhe.., Kisi Ko Pukare..etc.
Ore Naal Unai Naan..(SPB) is a great example.
KJY has sung a beautiful Pahadi song in the movie "Ayal Kathayezhuthukayane (Mallu)" - "Etho Nidra Than".
Ithire Naanam Pennil Kavilil..is arabhi based. Another good Arabhi song (Malyalam) is "Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay" from the movie "Kannezhuthi Pottum Thotte" sung by M.G Sreekumar.

I have a list of my own fav raagas and well, Iam not able to reason out why they are my most preferred ones. They are
1. Karaharapriya- "Maharahan ulagai aaLuvaan" from film Karna can be another benchmark song like "madhavi pon mayilaal". I also enjoyed the fusion in "poo malarnthida" and the folkish flavour in "thaana vandha sandhaname"
2. Reethigowlai
3. Gowrimanohari - IR has done many songs to his credit
4. Behaag
5. Saraswathi
6. Saramathi
7. Sreeragam/Madhyamavathi/Manirangu/Brindhavana saaranga family- Must be preferred by all the MDs.
8. Yaman - Iam yet to find a soul who dislikes this raaga.
I have one raagam which doesn't go with my taste and it is Desh

Mmm... interesting selections, mythila.
Karaharapriya raagam gives the flavor of ultimate classicism. There are several super songs in the raaga, eg., check out 'Pani Vizhum Paruva Nilaa' from Panneer Nathigal by S-G or 'Unnai Vaazhtha Vanthen' from Unnai Vaazhti Paadugiren. Have you heard these songs yet?
I don't blame you guys who like Madhyamavathi and/or Brindhavana Saranga raagam. There's nothing better than either of these raagams played out on a naadhaswaram.
Desh raagam seems to be a difficult one to dilute. I tried it once before; the final product sounded much like Kaakkai Siraginile's 'Oranjaaram Ushaar Iyyar Ushaaru'!
I too have a raagam that doesn't go with my taste; that's Vakhulabharanam. But IR seems to like it a lot, especially for dance songs (eg, Enga Rathnam Thanga Rathnam, Pachondiye Keladaa, Pattu Poove (in Naanum Oru Thozhilaali), etc.) and pathos songs (eg, Aarum Adhu Aazham Illai, Vaanam Paartha Karisakkaadu, Kinnathil Then Vadithu, etc.) Some of the younger MDs also use this raaga, eg, YSR, ARR.

Mythila,
Thanks for reminiding "Desh" which I keep close to my heart and forgot to mention in my previous post!
IR also has used "Keeravani" many times (max I think). Two good IR Keeravani(Malayalam)songs are O prye priye..from Geethanjali and "Devasangeetham Neeyalle..." from Guru.

My favourite raag has to be Hamir Kalyani(Nila Kaigirathu, from the film Indra). Unfortunately, not many have used this raaga. Also im a fan of Maand (Anjali Anjali from the film Duet)
