An interview with singer KK
By: Kankana Basu
September 11, 2003
From the whimsical Awarapan Banjarapan number in Jism to the frisky Ding Dong song in Kucch To Hai, Krishna Kumar Menon or KK (as he is popularly known) has proved he can bring a wide and diverse variety of moods and emotions into his vocals. “You have to be an actor along with a singer,” grins KK.
However, the road to success has not been a smooth one for this Delhi-based singer who came to Mumbai a few years ago. “I started singing on stage when I was two years old. Later, I was part of my college rock band in Delhi after which I started singing jingles.”
But these assignments did not satisfy the singer who then shifted to Mumbai some years later.
“The first few years in Mumbai were frustrating as I drew a blank in all my attempts to break into the filmi circuit,” says KK. Finally, he got a call to sing a one-minute jingle for Leslie Lewis for UTV which kickstarted his career.
Today, KK is one of the hottest names in the ad world. He has sung over 3,500 jingles including Monte Carlo, TVS Scooty, Amul, Britannia and Pepsi’s Yeh Dil Maange More in a span of four years.
“Contrary to popular opinion, I feel singing jingles is a major challenge,” says KK. “To condense and portray a mood within minutes is not an easy task,’ he explains.
KK’s dream to sing for a Bollywood movie materialised when Vishal Bharadwaj asked him to sing Chod Aaye Hum in Gulzar’s Maachis. But what catapulted him into the big league was the wildly popular Tadap Tadap in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
“It was one of the biggest hits of my career. When I performed at shows in the US, I always chose this song for the grand finale and it never failed to bring the house down,” reveals this singer who has had no formal training in music.
Not much of a party animal, KK loves to chill out in his cosy apartment at Yari Road with wife Jyoti and his two kids. “Jyoti is a pillar of strength and the sunshine factor in my life,” he says.

Kyunki KK is a success story
LEKHA MENON
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, APRIL 06, 2004 04:36:03 AM ]
He’s as cool as they come. Don’t be misled by the curly mop of hair, rock-star persona and wacky sense of humour. KK, aka Krishna Kumar Menon, maybe making waves in film music these days but is remarkably unaffected by the trappings of fame. So while the entire nation is swinging to his ‘It’s the time to disco’, the man himself wants to move away from it all for a while to concentrate on his new album.
"I am excited about it," he says. "And hence I am deliberately cutting down on my film assignments." But isn’t it necessary to be in public eye in the highly-competitive music world? Especially when the going’s so good for him. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, to name just a few. "Not really," says the versatile singer who was in Ahmedabad for a show. "Besides, there are so many other guys out there. Sonu, Shaan and others. We are all very chilled out, there’s no competition."
Sounds hard to believe, but then this Delhiite claims he never aimed for superstardom. He was happy being part of various rock bands in the capital and doing the odd jingle. "It was my wife who brought me to Mumbai," he says. After the initial struggle and few ads, he got his first break with Leslie Lewis.Pal, his debut album was a hit.The big break came with ‘Tadap Tadap’ (from Hum Dil...) and there has been no looking back. Surprising when you think, he was never interested in singing in Hindi. "I always wanted to do English numbers, though there are no takers for it. But now I am singing in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu," he chuckles.
Part of KK’s success has also been because of his tendency to move away from the crowd to create a niche for himself. So when Bhangra pop was ruling the marquee he came out with a soulful Pal. And now when it’s remixes all the way, he comes out with another original. Another reason is, in his own words, "honesty". "I had met Illayaraja once for some film score. I admitted I had no base in classical music, would he still try me? But he did and I worked hard on the number, he liked it and offered me another one. So you see honesty pays."
And he claims he isn’t part of the jet-set-mustsee brigade either. "I don’t go to discos, don’t smoke and don’t party. Yet people approach me with work," he says, refuting the notion that ‘visibility’ gets assignments.
Low-profile he certainly is. And down-toearth too. He still speaks in chaste Malayalam, remembers the sights and sounds of downtown Kerala and believes the best way to draw inspiration for emotions is to look at the poverty and people around us.
It’s an attitude that’s certainly paying rich dividends on the work front. Shows, albums and of course, playback singing — it’s all happening for him. What’s next? "Don’t know. I never plan. Life may have some surprises or shocks for you tomorrow," is his parting shot.

K K has a great voice. With the variety of songs that he has sung,I feel he should have become more famous than he is now. May be because he does not like media exposure. I am a great fan of KAY KAY.May he continue to give us such lovely songs.
