Could someone please tell me what is the difference between Simehendramadhyamam and Shanmukhapriya, which sound so similar to me.Whenver I listen to the first track in IR Ji's How To Name It, I am confused whether it is Simha or Shanmukha.Someone please clarify the difference between the two.

Sangeetha,
Shanmukhapriya -

Simhendra Madhyamam -

The diff. is only in Ni and hence the similarity. There is a character attributed to SP which is so evident in 'thamthana thamthana' from puthiya vaarpugaL, that is the melody could have spurts of movement. Another example : the first violin interlude in "Gopika vasantham" (same raaga) in His Highness Abdulla.
I think it is SP in How to name it.

First of all, I would like to thank for responding to my query. Shriram Ji, After gathering info from other sources, I came to know that the first track in How To Name It starts with Simha and then flows into Shankmukha and shows shades of (I think it is Patdeep in Hindustani Music) a raaga in which the song Ponvaanam from Indru Nee Naalai Naan was composed and finally goes back to Simha again. It is a Raagamaalika.

Poovanam is really a superb number. It might even pip one of the other Patdeep classics, "Megha Chaaye aadhi raath" by SDB.

the song "Maraindirundhe paarkum marmam enna" is an all time classic in pure shanmukhapriya - no kalappadams....

Maestro IR is great in using Raagas in movie songs. He has handled Shanmuka in a very classic manner in Thamthana Thamthana from Pudiya Varppugal to making it more easy for the commoner who has less or no knowledge about raagas which is evident in the song Kaadhal Kassakudaiya from Aan Paavam. In what Raaga is the song Sollayo Vai Thirandhu composed? I haven't listened to it but mamma says it must be shanmukha. She sings it like Varamondru thandharulvai (Carnatic music) composed in Shanmukhapriya.

Sangeetha: Yes, Sollaayo is in Shanmukapriya. IR has done a lot of great Shanmukapriyas.
Two of his lovely Simhendramadhyamams that come to mind are KAATRODU KUZLALIN NAADHAME and NEE POURNAMI. Both true classics!
