Happened to see these again recently. Three legendary movies :-).Which film, would you say displayed the best synergy between the MD and the director?. (Say judging by "aptness" of songs & the picturizations, BGMs specific to the situations.)

Salangai Oli
Unbelievable in every way. Many people are still surprised when told it is a dubbed movie. K. Viswanath, Kamalahasan & IR made this movie, nay kaaviyam.
Naayagan
Though it carries the "smear" that it was inspired by Godfather, it is a wonderfully made movie. Songs took a backseat in this Maniratnam feature, but the BGM is enough to illustrate the MD.
Punnagai Mannan
A depressing movie with too much of "computer" music. :)

ROTFL/Aadhavan,
U think PM had too much of "computer music". I thought "the PM theme music" had eternal longevity (saagavaram petra music bit). Sounds refreshing every time u hear it :-)

It appears to my weird(or wired wateve) mind that Mahanadhi is the Best musical than any of the above. Just that one song "Thanmanamulla nenju ennalum sahathu.. " will ring for years

:-) dear whynot,
I did have lovely options to spend my weekend [and i actually did use one such lovely option, but i have no intentions of telling that to you, that too in a public forum :-)]. It intriguing to see how much u hate "depressing" movies, but movies with "fatal" ends seem to attract public more & seem to kindle the MD of the film better than happy ones (especially in the BGM arena). ["whynot", if u termed the above three as depressing, i shudder to think what havoc a film like MAHANADHI will have on u :-)). It is my eternal favourite when it comes to kamal movies]
Saran, i wud like to have ur views anyway :-). Neenga muthu udhirtha nalla irukkum :-)
Kum_Laden, u r so right abt MAHANADHI. Surprisingly, Salangai Oli/Punnagai Mannan/Nayagan all have positive things thru'out with fatal ends, but MAHANADHI has ultra negative heavy moments thru'out while ending on a positive note. Still, the one with positive ending (MAHANADHI) has heavier effect on you...
ROTFL, same feeling abt "thenpandi seemayile". I personally feel Maniratnam & IR synergy might just score above the other two. Whatdya think? I believe Maniratnam as a demanding director offered so many silent "voids" in the film NAYAGAN wherein the MD has to fill'in with heavy BGMs.

If you are talking about BGM, Nayagan wins hands down.
Next would be Salangai Oli.
As for K Balachander, songs complement his movie very much and play a secondary role.

i will put the question in a different angle. In which film, of these three, do u think the director placed more responsibilities on the shoulders of the MD? [No, punnagai mannan cannot be ruled out straightaway ruled out while answering this question. IMHO, its a strong contender.]

...In which film, of these three, do u think the director placed more responsibilities on the shoulders of the MD?...
My ranking:
1) Salangai Oli
2) Punnagai Mannan
3) Nayagan
My ranking is based on the involvement of the music with the story.

whynot..which film had a more depressing theme, according to u? [i am curious, b'cos, ur ranking above seems to have been influenced by the 'heaviness' in the script]

I don't think you can compare like that twilight_zone.
Nayagan and Punnagai Mannan do not need songs. They would have survived without the MD (except BGM) :)

Nayagan doesnt have many SUPER DOOPER hit songs like the other two movies..agreed that "neeyoru kaathal" and "then pandi" are great songs..but still the count only comes to 2..
songs wise PM leads SO in my humble opinion.
BGM wise this is my order
1)SO
2)Nayagan
3)PM

All the 3 movies are great. All these movies had good storyline and nice songs. And ofcourse an excellent BGM. Nayagan --- To me, all the songs are nice, "nee oru kaathal sangeetham", "Thenpaandi seemaiyilae", "Naan siritthaal Deepavali" and ofcourse "Nilaa athu vaanatthu maelae". Whynot & gowri, sandaikku varaatheenga! The BGM part of it, is awesome. It really lifts the movie. PM --- Excellent songs, "Enna sattham", "aethaetho ennam valarthaen" to name some and BGM! SO --- Excellent movie in all aspects. IMHO, SO comes first, followed by Nayagan and PM...

salangai oli, depressing movie'yA? enna vidhadhil? another says it had a fatal ending??? In what way? (Agreed, all deaths are tragic, but when someone passes down a legacy -with a `I've completed my job with satisfaction' feel- and calmly goes to sleep, I won't call it fatal!
even in those scenes when Kamal drinks in low ebb and sings `thakida thidhimi' ones jumps around in elation despite those heavy emotions when Jayapradha approaches him with kungumam .... depressing is definitely not the way to define the film...thaththarigida dhiththarigida dhA..tharigida dhAA...tharigida dhAA:-)))

TZ,
I feel it's NAYAGAN!!! Great music from IR!! IMHO, In mani's movies, the dialogues are always short and crispy. IR did a commendable job for mani's movies by giving nice songs and GREAT and as well an APT BGM!!! May be that's the reason, i feel something is missing in his movies, nowadays. Whether those golden days will come back??!! NOM!!!

JKB, u r right. A film like Sindhu Bhairavi can be one hell of a challenge to any composer. Very true.
