Well guys,
Here is a link to Chithra's very latest interview where she talks in depth about some issues. Also, apparently she has visited newtfmpage.com in the past. Was surprised there. She talks about Malayalam music, Telugu music, Hindi music field and other interesting bits I have not seen in other interviews. Definite read for her fans:-)

Thanks for the link. It was a pleasant read. As always Chitra was her sweet self. It was a pleasant surprise to me that she can speak in telugu.

This is a great interview. First of all, hats off to the interviewer who seemed to be knowledgeable in the subject. Second, thanks to Chitra for being secure yet humble which led to a fairly candid interview.
The bombay politics (we will always be the second grade Madrasis in Bollywood) was a painful reminder of how things have not changed over the years. Her remarks about Sarath (and his style of music) was refreshing.

`mangnal prasAdavum' (nagakshadhangnaL),
'pAdaRiyEn' (sindhu bhairavi)

Uhm..actually, a lot of the questions in that interview regarding Malayalam stuff was contributed by MS. He should be thanked.
The other films she won national award for was: Minsara kanavu(96), Virasaat(97), and I think she won in 1989 for a malayalam film called "vaishali".

............But still there is a lot of discrimination against south Indian singers in north India; they never encourage south Indian singers much...........

Yes, MS is Muralishankar, and a very popular DF'er. Actually, I would say at least 75% of the questions where formed by him. So it WAS someone knowledgeable.
It's too bad that Tamil/Telugu film industry holds people like Udit Narayanan and Sadhana Sargam on a pedestal while Hindi industry discriminates singers from the latter industry. I would love to see some singers like Swarnalatha, Unnimenon, Unnikrishnan etc, getting more chances than the likes of Udit Narayanan killing a langauge in the name of singing and getting payed handsomely for the same, while the south singers don't get payed even half the amount:-(
She never seems to forget to give due where it needs to be given. Omana Kutty, Jesudas, Illayaraja, SPB.

aruvi,
fyi.. I am a part of the site that published the article (telugucinema.com). It seems, the questions were from Kalyan Kathir as mentioned in the article, and not MS. Seems Kalyan Kathir is also a DF'er. Wonder who that DF'er is! :)

I was lucky to speak to Chitra for about 10 mins in a couple of interactions:) during one of her concerts this July in US. I introduced myself to her during the intermission, congratulated on her Chinna Kuyil (daughter), and requested her to sing "Shivakara damaruga" (Mal). She said that they have been asked not to sing many melodious and Mal songs. She speaks good telugu and before singing "O priya priya" from Geetanjali (Tel) along with her co-singer Biju Narayan, she said that it was his first Telugu song on stage and requested all to forgive if there were any mistakes. Guess what, to my ears, he was perfect. He is an amazing singer and 100 times better than the current Telugu (and even almost all Tamil) singers. Both were very simple and humble. They sang Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi songs.
After the concert, while everybody were standing in a queue and taking autographs from Chitra, I was content standing about 5 feet straight in front of her and observing/looking at her:-) Suddenly she looked up at me and apologized for not having sung the song I had requested earlier during the break. Can you believe that? I simply wondered what being simple, humble and down-to-earth was!
Later, told her that I was a big fan of IR's music and loved her voice. Happened to ask her why she was not singing (m)any Tamil songs of late. She replied that not many calls were coming her way, probably, because of the current trend. She also mentioned that some wanted the singers to sing without much/any inhibitions, and that was difficult for singers like her (who have reached a certain stage in their career)
Spoke to her husband too. He was very simple, courteous and an unassuming person who seemed to prefer not be in limelight. Asked her if she was singing for IR's TiS. She was not aware of TiS and I explained about it in brief. It was already late, they were very tired (after more than 6 hrs) and were leaving one way, while I was going the other way. But then, I had some pamphlets of TiS kept at an exit and wanted to share those with her as well, as we know her regard for IR. When I went with the TiS brochure, they were in a car ready to leave and she was talking on a cell phone. After her call, the driver (car owner:)) opened the door for me, I handed over the brochure and explained its contents in brief. Even at that time, her husband once again enquired about me and wished me well. During all these interactions, Chitra was ever smiling. I then stood about 10-15 feet away from their car, but the lights inside remained turned on for 3-4 minutes more, with all attention she finished reading the pamphlet, the lights went off, and their car moved.
Apologize for any boring narration/personal incidents. Just wanted to share with you Chitra's (and ever her husband's) simple and unassuming nature. It was as if I could feel her innocence, warmth and compassion. An unexpected and unforgettable experience.

Isaiosai
No apologies needed. That was a wonderful description. I could even picturize it right in front of my eyes. Yet another reason to be part of this DF!
Beginning of digression.........
Biju Narayanan is one heavily underrated singer. What a voice he has! The first time I heard was in the Marivillin from Summer in Bethlehem (I think!). It is a duet with Srinivas. He completely overshadows Srinivas in this song. I instantly loved his voice then. I hear he sings a lot in Malayalam and almost not at all in Telugu/Tamil. We know whose loss that is!
Only yesterday I was listening to another song of his called Atma Nayike from the Mallu movie Sidhartha (listen to it on raaga.com). Lovely rendition of abheri ragam (I think!). He goes through those light gamaka-filled passages so neatly and fluidly that it amazes me why such singers are not given their due.
Anyway, sorry for the digression.

Wow! Thanks to all for this nice thread! I used to search on "Chithra" everyday for something about this great singer who has been forgotten for a while in TFM.
Isaiosai - your article was great - just goes to prove that more than her voice and talent, it is Chithra's unassuming self that has taken her to great heights - what do others think?
Hope we get to see/hear more of this great singer.
