My top directors in tamil regards to picturisation are as follows:
1.Sridhar-light years ahead of his time- a real trend setter
2.Maniratnam
3.Balachander
4.Barathiraja
5.Mahendran ,Balumahendra
Should I have included Shankar in the above list?
and where does MGR fit here-everybody knows that he was the real force behind all his song sequences-right from conception, choice of tunes and execution.
I welcome your views.

Iam pasting few lines from a greeting here,
A Wonderful Resolution for the New Year!
What amazing gifts the new year brings! An entire
year's worth of wonderful opportunities, given to us
one sunrise at a time. Many of the moments ahead will
be marvelously disguised as ordinary days, but each one
of us has the chance to make something extraordinary
out of them.
Each new day is a blank page in the diary of your life.
The secret of success is in turning that diary into the
best story you possibly can. Have pages on understanding
and tales of overcoming hardships. Fill your story with
enthusiasm, adventure, learning, and laughter. And make
each chapter reflect time doing these things:
Follow your dreams. Work hard. Be kind. Do what you
can to make the door open on a day that is filled with
inspiration in some special way. Remember: Goodness
will be rewarded. Smiles will pay you back. Have fun.
Find strength. Be truthful. Have faith. Don't focus on
anything you lack.
Realize that people are the treasures in life, and
happiness is the real wealth. Have a diary that
describes how you're doing your best, and...
the rest will take care of itself.

Sridhar? Not if you look at his whole career. Both in "Ninaivellam Nithya" and "Thendrale Ennai Thodu", arguably two of IR's greatest films, his picturisation was way short of standards. It could be said though that these films were way past his prime years. Though, his "ore naal" picturisation for "Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu" was a polished attempt.
IMO, Mahendran must be the best in terms of aesthetics, framing of the scenes, and to a great extent, being the sole torchbearer of the 'song in the background' trend. Udhiripookkal, Mullum Malarum, Nenjathai Killathe, Johnny,... - no director comes close to his repertoire of songs. I think he was the 1st, and one of very few, directors to even match actors' costumes to the frame. "En vaanile" from Johnny and "Paruvame Pudhiya Paadal" of Nenjathai Killathe stand up to be counted as the best ever songs in TFM history.
Vasanth must surely feature in any list of such directors. Even in a debacle such as "Nee Padhi Naan Padhi", he has shown ingenuity (Nivedha) and stood aside as a director with sensitivity.
Balu Mahendra's recordbook can be only faulted on the count that he stuck to a groove in making most of his songs. Though enchanting visually, his stock shots of Ooty and other hilly environs do appear monotonous at times; no denying though that they complemented IR's music beautifully. "Kanne Kalaimane" must rank as one of the top 5 songs ever in TFM history in terms of music, visuals, direction,..
As early as his 2nd film "Pagal Nilavu", Maniratnam exhibited a rare calibre in songmaking. You can discern a distinct Mahendran influence in many of his early films. From a very lyrical "Mouna Ragam", his shift towards a more techno-influenced style is evident in "Agni Natchathiram" and the later films. Needs to be criticised for most annoying repetitions of young kids/grannies prancing around. Can be credited with doing justice to arguably ARR's best filmscore (and in my opinion, one of the top 10 in TFM) in the debacle called "Thiruda Thiruda", IR's best urban effort "Agni Natchathiram", and the landmark "Mouna Raagam".
Bharathiraaja has given, arguably, as good a collection of songs as anyone in Indian film history. But, what did he become typecast for? His fetish for floating extras in bridal whites. He appears to be the best at conceptualising the song in terms of the situation, lyrics, and tune, but falls way short in picturisation many times.
I don't think that K Balachander gave songs much prominence in his scheme of things in his long career, save MSV's brilliant "Ninaithale Inikkum". His recent forays have been disastrous; I thought he spoilt some of ARR's best work in "Duet" and PP beyond measure. I think Maniratnam or even Farhan Akhtar (Dil Chahta Hai) would've loved to handle his innovative "manmada maasam"
Can we forget Fazil? From his debut(in Tamil) "Poove Poochoodavaa" that brought in a breath of fresh air from verdant Alappuzha countryside, he's had some very good songs to show. Must be said that his horrific handling of "aagaya vennilave" in "Arangetra Velai" is a near-perfect example of how a great song can be marred by sloppy direction.
K Vishwanath - even though most of his tamil films were dubbed/remakes of Telugu films, he's a fine director of songs. "Mounamana Neram" of Salangai Oli is a classic romantic no.
We need to also mention Singeetham Sreenivasa Rao. His "Andhi mazhai" of Raajaparvai can be ranked alongside the best in Indian cinema.
I didn't much think of Shankar as a great director of songs, reinforced by his horrific handling of "Jeans", esp. the crude graphics-botched "kannodu kaanbathellam". In "Mudhalvan" though, I was impressed by his balance of fantasy, grandeur, and aesthetics.
What about Kadhir? He's had his fair share of bloomers, but I thought "Kaadal Desam" showcased a range from the youthful (Mustafa) to the sublime (o vennila)
Cheran might not have had celebrated MDs to work with him always, but his songs from "Porkkalam" to the recent "Paandavar Bhoomi" mark him out as a reasonably good songmaker in the realistic mode.
With just 2 films to his credit, Bala shows early promise going by his neat handling of "mun paniya" in Nandhaa. Charan, Rajeev Menon, Azhagam Perumal,.. - the list will hopefully grow longer
