Why are the songs from Shankarabharanam "purely" Carnatic, whereas the songs from Salangai Oli "not-so-purely" Carnatic?
What is the factor that makes for the difference between this sort of "purity" and "impurity"??

  sankarabaranam speaks only about the life, aesthetics, sanctity of a traditional classical musician. There is only bakthi with the main roles. Manju bargavi only worships sankara sastrigal and there is no love or romance. it is about sankara sastri just not willing to compromise on classical music.
  Salangai oli is about a young dancer who sees all phases(faces?) of life. Friendship, success, failiure, love, romance, disease and affection. so the songs will have variety according to the situation. Even there the songs which will stick to Bharata natyam are strictly classical( om namasivaya - hindolam; naada vinodangal - raga maligai: sreeranjani and vasantha; vedham - hamsanandhi; vaan pole - mohanam; thakida thadhimi - sindhu bairavi and so on.) Any way the major difference will be because of the strong classical background of the genius KVM and melodious image of IR.

  shuba, "Thakida thadhimi" is Shanmughapriya.
  Though "Mounamaana neram" can be classified as a light melody, it is still based on Pahaadi raagam
