Is there any basis on which we can rank the music directors?
1)Number of movies he scores in a given period of time
2)Number of hit songs given in a period of time
3)Being Recognized outside your native place
4)Ability to compose songs with great diversity
IR satisfies all the four requirements. He was dominating the 80's. Apart from T.Rajendar and likes of Sankar Ganesh, MSV and ChandraBose there was none to compete with him. Infact he clearly outnumbered all his competitors put together. 80% his songs were hits. He composed both Carnatic and Folks with equal felicity. He was recognized all over country. Let us see how ARR fares. As far as competition goes, Deva has outnumbered him. Sure ARR has scored some nice songs over a period of 10 years. But how many? The biggest achievment in ARR's life is his work was recognized all over India. ARR is still falling short when it comes to composing lively folks music. So when you look into these factors ARR is not even no.1 nowadays as i see Harris Jeyaraj, Bharadwaj and whole bunch new MDs compete equally.
The reason is ARR takes a very long time to compose his songs. I disagree with the fact that ARR is wizkid or wizard or whatever. I agree he is a hard worker. Defenitely genius title belongs to IR as he took very little time to compose tunes.

can we add number of fans ? :)
or can we change the topic to How to rank Music Directors other then IR?
:):)
uttam sir, you have clearly told IR dominated, no one could compete with him etc etc how did you rank him, the answer is simple ....every ranking here is done by personal choice,
The biggest achievment in ARR's life is his work was recognized all over India. ARR is still falling short....
enna sir pollatha Armstrong he just went to the moon, he was talked about all over the world, but still he cannot drive a car in the mount road...but for me, Mr.Pandiyan, my good old friend who was a driving 18A bus route is a better driver than armstrong, who could just fly appollo's....this my personal choice :)
btw: intha lively folk music na enna? :):) :)

Uthaman, your first criteria, "number or movies he scores in a given period of time", is ruled out if you are to rank music directors on quality music.. heck, if number of movies is the criteria.. then surely, IR rules the 70's era, Deva rules the 90's and so on.. just because he (de)composed music for a 100 films, that makes him no better a director than a chap who, say, did 50.
Quality was always the key word Uthaman.. not quantity.
And about that bit on IR's diversity, if he was indeed as diverse as you claim him to be, its seems strange that the rest of India didn't quit catch on to IR's "diverse abilities in music"..

Oh and I nearly forgot.. what was that about ARR not being able to compose 'lively folk music' ? So how do you best describe the numbers for Lagaan ? "Dead reggae beats" ?! Is that it Uthaman ?

I guess you are quite new to this forum. Everything you have raised has been throughly discussed before.
Just spend some days going through the archives, and it will answer all your questions.
Whether you like it or not, whether you choose to bang your head on the wall... the fact remains that ARR is ruling TFM right now.
You can choose to argue till the cows come home, but nothing is going to change that.

There are many ways of ranking MDs.For the benefit of "Uthama Rasa" i have listed a few.
If there are just 7 of them around you can rank them as "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ne ".If there are more numbers use quarter tones. So you can rank 22 musicians. The 17the century musicians in the court of Aurngazeb were ranked using this system.
(The Indian music History by Neelakanda Sastry page 43 Volume XXV)
You can rank then A B C or even a ,b,c but this has a limitation if the number of MDs are more than 26+26.However using an extended text field you can have AA,AB,AC ...AAA,AAB..etc.However in the early days of King George IV the latin alphabets were used.
(The music history -An analysis by Sir Paul Harrington. University of Wales 1904)
The simplest form of ranking is using 1,2,3 or First ,Second (Roman numerals are advised). Before the use of arabic/Indian numerals latin numerals was used.(Roman History - A musical purview by Rigardo Gucci Univeristy of Roma )

What a joke! I do not understand how you crack so spontaneous a joke! To quote Vivek as in "Tamizhan" "Thaanaa Varudhu!"
With flops like *, jodi, tenali etc, is he atleast in the field? please let me know that first!
At the rate of 1 good song / movie, if you call him a genius, then Deva is a genius, YSR is a genius; why leave out Sirpi or Bhararwaj, with the latter's "O! podu" being a massive hit.
The greatest achievement of ARR is retaining MR, Shankar and Rajni with him , despite his mediocre score for their films.
IMHO, uthaman is 100% correct .

Infact both Star and Thenali topped Chikku Bukku program in vijay. Though, not to a longer period as compared to other ARR hits, nevertheless they topped.
STAR for a change was very welcomed by C areas. People who used to hear all gana and deva stuffs liked the rasiga song. But, from such people you can't actually say the worth of an album. But, what I have said is just FYI.

Just because * and Thenali were on top of the charts it doesnt mean that ARR is a genius. What tops the chart depends on many factors, the competition at that time, marketing etc. A more objective comparison would be to take into account the creations when IR was at his peak and ARR of today.

This is called circular reasoning.

(pls note that I am neither saying that he is not one, dear ARR fans. :) )
If you care to follow the discussion, you would have realised that I was addressing Cheenu who had said that Star and Thenali were flops.
Your "objective comparison" is not one, because times have changed.
Furthermore different personalities behave differently - IR is happy accepting movies left, right, top, below & centre (barring a rare few).
ARR is nothing like that.
