Guys,
Raaja is famous for experimenting in many ways. He covered a good range of different TYPES in music. But AR seems to be more in this , as he scored for Advertisement initially , films ,and in pop working with Michael jackson , sufi music with Nusrath fateh ali , Hindi film music with top directors , classical songs (like in INDIRA , SANGAMAM, PADAYAPPA etc) and many various fields with various people....SO DO U THINK HE OVERTOOK RAAJA IN THE RANGE OF DIFFERENT MUSIC ???

>>IR's approach to music is very 'fundamental' or what people call as approaching from 'first principles'<<
That's what I thought when I heard ARR initially.
Are you talking of early IR's works ?

To give full credit, IR is still doing it. I hear the back to basics approach in :
- Mayil polla ponnu - Bharathi
Songs from Friends and some 1 or 2 from Kannukul Nilavu and Kaadhalakku Mariyadhai..

Anybody can think of a good 'Dabbang Koothu' by ARR ? No better energy drink than a IR + SPB 'koothu pattu'

cosmician..I think you are missing the point. I will give you an example of 'first principles'. Every year, car makers come out with new model..better engine..better suspension etc ...but this year Camry and Nissan Altima have come out with a 'drive by wire' system..This is the sort of technology introduced in fighter planes (F-16) a decade ago. When you press the accelerator..you are not pushing/pulling a cable that pumps more gas..you are just sending an electric signal by wire to the fuel-injection system to pump more gas..This does the same thing but it is more reliable. This is what I call a 'fundamental' change. The car probably looks almost the same or does the same task of transporting you but there is a fundamental change in the way it works (albeit that much significant).
IR's approach is like this..he likes to do something fundamental..like writing a bass line for a carnatic composition. It is the same old bass, mridhangam..and KJY but still it is new (I dont this MSV has done this..somebody correct me).
(BTW, now I listen to music on my main stereo system and still surf the web on my laptop..I have wireless ..just installed. yippeee !!!)

Agreed Kiru..'fly-by-wire' enhances my car's performance...
how come IR's "first principle" appraoch don't convert film songs into a hit. ARR's maybe a 'modern koothu'..that's why I prefer to call it a "first principles"...more like a Paradigm Shift....doesn't mean IR has become less creative...only that there was a generation gap which he later managed to bridge with the numbers that I'd mentioned above. But still I don't get the "Thalapathi" experience.

Tamil film is in its death bed because of people like Vijaykanth. Who is he to stop actors and actresses from giving interview in TV? Why did he give his film clippings to Sun TV before? Ask him to stop accusing TV instead of the stupid stories of Tamil movies. Let him lower his compensation for acting. Let him not give any interview to Sun TV also people don't want to see him anyways.
Why are you guys talking about Tamil movies which are worth nothing and wasting your time.

Talk of ridiculous analogies-I dont see what drive-by-wire has to do with Raaja's approach. This is what happens when desperate fans begin to clutch at straws from unlikely places. The following questions should put this tack out of its misery-
1.Drive-by-wire improves reliability, reduces vehicle weight etc.Is this what you want from a song-that it be more reliable, lightweight?
2.Are you're serious about first principles? Then ask yourself-why bass lines?why Carnatic compositions? This is just fusion-it is NOT a first principle approach.
3.By bringing in Pro-tools,cutting-edge Korgs and Yamahas AND top-notch musicians like Ranjit Barot,Vishwamohan Bhatt,John Themis(this is a very long list)ARR has transformed the FEEL of popular song in India, whatever old stick-in-the-mud hardlines say or think. And that is what matters-not its under-the-hood performance or reduction in moving parts!.But has he changed the first principles?Thats a discussion for another day.

IR is the one who is trying different style of music for ever. Forget about the songs. If you take the BGM of Guru (Malayalam), Kaalaa Pani(Malayalam), Kaathal Ooviyam, Muthal Mariyaathai, Bharathi, ... Azhaki, the great Hey Ram, I think, there is no need for any comparsion with any other MDs. ARR is good in songs. He tried something different. But in BGM, he is still a novice. In BGM, IR used to put lot of efforts and he make us feel the punch of the scene. The usage of instruments is fantastic in IR. He is the one who has to be compared with Beethovan, Mozart, not with ARR. ARR has to go (long)n path to attain IR's musical knowledge.

sreeni..I am not a desperate fan. And I dont have to clutch at straws..there are enough naval quality ropes !!! You surely have misunderstand the first principles approach. But you are right about the fusion part. IR does fusion at the very basic level..It is not just a change of look and feel. The basic structure of the song is propped up with a harmonic backdrop. I dont know why you bring in ARR..Maybe to justify the topic. But I am not at all interested in the comparison..or maybe I am ..but if you talk about 'basic' stuff like the one I have mentioned that will be good..And please for heaven sake dont assume that everybody does not know what synthesized music is all about or unaware of artistes like VMBhatt.
(BTW, did I say ARR is bad or what ? Nope..just mentioned the approach of IR..you guys are trying )
