"manjaL pUsi manjam koNda rAmA" - a beautiful song by L.R.Anjali and Kovai Sounderarajan. Probably the best song of both singers, from their short playback career.
Music by Vijayabhaskar. Movie: Ungal Viruppam.
Released some time in the mid 70s.
Happy listening!

Neel D -
Have you found a long lost MP3 rarities folder or something? Praise be! :-)
Not so long ago, I was humming this song (around the time that the Yaedho Ninaivugal thread was busy) and it took me down a narrow street stippled with marriage chaththrams here there and around the corner. This song used to be very auspicious before and after the getti melam moment.
LRA and KS in this song have the early youthfulness of LRE and TMS. In fact, I thought it was by the latter duo for a very long time, 'til Saravanan set the record straight (and right).
The song is charming (to me) because it is identifiably "communal" tamizh, sung with a native familiarity of delivery and a casualness that comes with a good understanding of the "idiom" of the tamizh language. The carefree "rama, rama" bit is quintessential namma ooru! I did not know it was composed by the prodigious VB!
Now, when can I expect Aerikkarai Mela Poravale Pennmayile ? :-)(The song was one of my mother's favourites.Whenever this song was broadcast, she'd hum along with it, even if she was frying onions or mixing neelam for the thunimani somewhere else in the house. That she still stumbles with her spoken tamizh to this day is one of life's tragicomedies.)

Naaz, "Aerikkarai.." is fairly easily available. the usual suspects like coolgoose.com should have the mp3.

Appreciate the pointer. I'll check out CG for the song...but I find that Neel D's transfers are of a higher standard and quality. But, as they say: Bird in Hand (and what's coolgoose if not that? :-))

Naaz,
It is a mangalakaramaana love song that filled the air in the 70s. Strangely several hits from the 70s just disappeared as soon as 1980 rolled in.

Sad News!
Kovai Soundararajan's real name was Chinnasami Srinivasan. When Aringnar Anna heard him sing in a programme in Coimabatore, he renamed him as Kovai Soundararajan, as his voice bore a striking similarity to the voice of TMS. KS struggled for opportunities, as while TMS himself was still going strong, there were very few takers for a TMS clone.
However MSV, Vijayabhaskar and S-G gave him some memorable songs, and KS made the most of them. Songs like "Engaladhu bhoomi kaakka vandha sami"-Neethi, "Un kaathai kodu"- Engal Thaai, "Jambulingamae jadaathara" and "Mella pesungal"- both from Kaasethaan Kadavulada, "Indha naal nalla naal"-Aasirvaatham, "Kadavul potta kanakku"-Maalai Soodavaa, "Aanjaneya Anumanthayya"-Kaasi Yaathirai, "Sonpappdi sonappapdi"-En Magan, "Punnaimaram onnu thennai maram onnu"-Muththana Muththallavo, "Kannankarutha kuyil nirathavalae"-Dr.Siva, "Manjal poosi manjam konda" and "Appappa thambi"- both from Ungal Viruppam, Ilaya Thalaimurai title track, "Naan summa thodavae maataen"-Aval Oru Adhisayam ,"Gopurathilae oru chittukkuravi"–Shankar Salim Simon and “Oorai thirutha oru pillai poranthaan’- Vandikkaran Magan, ensure a place, humble though it may be, for KS, in the galaxy of Tamil singers.
(from the VJ chronology)
Here's a song with Kovai Sondararajan at his joyous best:

Wasn't he the singer who sang one of IR's rarest gems, from the movie "Kazhugu": "KAdhal Ennum Kovil Katti Vaithen Nenjil, Poojai Seithen, PAttisaithen, Thedi vandhAi Nee"? - I am still searching for this elusive number.

PP
that was sung by Kovai Murali ( I think son of one of the Soolamangalam sisters)
KS sang the lines for thengai in "Thee"
Salayile thunda virippom
Kalayile kanne vizhippom
in the first song at the harbour-MV sings for Rajini and Surendar for Master Sridhar.
Kannakarutha from Dr.Siva is one riot of a song by KS I love most.Heard him singing mostly of TMS songs on stage.
Hearty condolences.

Hi Saravanan,
It's very sad.. :-((
I've been trying to collect all Kovai Soundarrajan's songs.
Even Kovai Soundarrajan himself didn't mention
about the following songs.. i think, he forgot most of his songs..
"Un kaathai kodu"- Engal Thaai
"Punnaimaram onnu thennai maram onnu"-Muththana Muththallavo
"Appappa thambi"- Ungal Viruppan.
I've got the following songs from Sathya & Neel D. It will be very much helpful if you can upload the others songs (if you have with you)..

Neel D,
This song was not available anywhere in the web.
Thanks for the same.
Please upload if you have some other songs of Kovai Soundarrajan.
Chris Ganess,
Yes, Ofcourse. He didn't achieve commercial popularity eventhough some of the songs are very very good. I know him personally for a short period of time. He is very shy type. He never put any effort to get more chances. He took the chances, which came to him. Thatz it.
He was the one who got the chance to sing "paalooti valarthakili" from gouravam. He finished the recording and the song went for shooting as well. But, he lost the chance to TMS because of his shyness and fear. highly unlucky.
Thanks,
Chandran.

Great loss to his family......... A great man and great singer.. He is known for the dedication which he always had for his work..........A person who has evolved to an great extent only because of his hard work and the great voice which he had..............HE IS A GREAT WORKER......and a very humble soul. SPB is been one of his good friend. Most of the collegues like him because of his gentle approach and a person who respects people... He has done a 1000's of stage performance all over the world........His voice is outstanding especially a person who could sing at any point of time. Till his death he had a remarkable voice, he had been maintaining it so well...... GREAT MAN, GREAT SINGER, GREAT SOUL......... LET HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.............

mundhitteengaLe! "machaane achaaram poadu pozhuthoadu" is one of my best memories of KS. This song by S-G and sung by KS and VJ has a lot of local colour. The way he sang "pollaadha kaNNuNdu oorukkuLLey" has his stamp all over it!

hi thamirai,
I am kovai soundarrajan's eldest daughter. Your comments were really comforting. It is nice to see that there are people around to appreciate my father's performance even after his demise. Thanks for the same. Do you know my father personally? Because your comments look so..
I on behalf of my father and family thank all of you for your valuable responses in this forum.
bye.

Machane is certainly NOT by Kovai soundarRajan but by Krishnamurthy who also sang "en soga Kathaya keLu" in Thooral Ninnu poachu with MV.Krishnamurthy was a regular in S-G's stage programmes singing TMS songs.
I am 100% sure as I had seen the movie and remeber the radio announcement in TS2 and Vividh Bharathi.Kovai's voice at its best in "Jambulingame".....you can make out the differnce.

To Ks Daughter,
I am a Srilankan, and my dad was a friend of your dad, when Mr.Kovai had been here for few stage performance he seldom use to stay in our house. My dad after hearing the sad news of your dads death was really upset.
My dad always used to talk about your dad and about his hard work, dedication and so on.
Only recently when I was browsing I got this thread through which I was able to share few of my dads thoughts and condolences for the great soul. My dads name is S.Rajan Kumar.
Take care....Convey my regards to your family. We are now settled in Canada, when there is chance to come to India we shall come and meet your family.
Thanks....
Tamarai Rajan Kumar
