When I was chatting with my sister over the phone tonight, she, on the course of the conversation, remarked that she had quit firing crackers now for the past 3 years as a way of expressing her grief and anger against those in our country, who exploit small children by forcing them into "CHILD LABOR" for manufacturing these fire-crackers. She doesn't even encourage watching people while they are firing crackers.
And then she related this incident which made her take this decision which she read this in a magazine quoted as narrated by our young actor Prashanth. He once received a letter from a child from Sivakaasi, written by the kid in his/her poor handwriting with lots of mistakes in it, which essentially read like this:
"...engalukku inga pattaasu thozhirchaalaila vElai seiyyaradhaala, niraiya saruma vyaadhilaam varudhu...kaN paarvailaam pOyi..naangallaam romba kashatap padarOm...adhanaala neenga....varra Deepavaliya eppadi vEnaa kondaadunga... aana...pattaasu mattum vaangaadheenga.."
Obviously, someone has helped the kid in writing this letter. But the message has reached. The kid's words are sure to melt our hearts. They don't deserve this at this tender age. As a first step to try to prevent this injustice, I have followed my sister's foot steps in RESOLVING NOT TO FIRE CRACKERS TILL THE TIME THIS CURSE IS ERASED OUT OF OUR COUNTRY. I am inviting you all to join our hearts in making this decision along with me and spread it as much as possible and again, as much as possible, through our friends, relatives and fellow Indians through word-of-mouth or emails or whichever way possible.
It's heartening to note that the children in many of the schools in Madras have sworn that they will not buy or fire crackers for this Deepaavali. We should be strong enough to even convince and stop the elders who would want to fire a cracker or two just for the sake of the sentiments that they carry for Deepavali.
Please use this thread to share your views and laws (both Indian and International) to stop this misery - CHILD LABOR - from happening.
LET'S RESOLVE NOW AND MOVE ON TO SPREAD THE WORD.
