One of very old interviews of IR
Found it out today...

What a bold Q&A from IR. Really liked this article and interview
Q : What is your view about music?
A : To me, music is nothing but fraud. The moment you play all the seven notes, music is completed. Then going on repeating it- in different permutations and combinations - is nothing short of cheating. The person whosuccessfully cheats a large audience for an extended period is called the "big" composer. Genuine music, to me,is the one which has no purpose. It should be as natural and as purposeless as the flow of the river. I have a purpose in creating my music. The purpose is business. Saint Thyagaraja sang songs to attain God. So even he had a purpose for his music. At least, he never sold his music. But take a farmer for instance. While ploughing, he spurts into a crescendo of music with no purpose. That is true music.

What's wrong with playing music to obtain God? Doing so is a utilization of one's God given talents. Actually, music is a part and parcel of God. That's why one cannot just sit down anytime and write a song; one has to be *INSPIRED* to do so. If you wrote tunes even as a hobby, as I do, you'd understand.

I think IR talks more of himself than others, here. I have always felt the way he rehashes his own interludes and so called tunes that he is the biggest cheat of all! But it's very rude of him to include others into his generalization. Talk about rudeness, who could beat IR!

See, its always safe to call one's whole team as roberers than to admit one's self as thief....thaniyaa mattina..dharma adi dhaan...That's why I think IR has called every one composing music as cheats....Avar oru gnyaani...namakku enna puriya povudhu.

when a farmer ploughs the field, it is second nature. feeding himself, family and community. the joy of making own food resources in the early days of civilization led to folk music, then devotional music, then that became classical when they became landlords in retrospection. IR is very right indeed, at his level of thought, pure music is unadulterated, unorchestrated (no strings or even wind instruments), unharmonic, just a single strain of melody like a wobbly thread that is the source of energy within an nanoest etom - "string theory" ;------))))
honestly, you think deeply and in a detached manner, impassionately you'll find that purpose is what causes all problems. even galaxies are born and die without purpose, however humans want to attach purpose to everything. IR is truly a Swami, who has come with the ultimate power of music to make as many understand that it needs a purpose to make us understand the futility of purpose ............;---)
Seriously, pure music is from pure unattached joy. IR has it but he serves it with a lot of purpose ( I mean Orchestra and Singers, etc....)
