Eventhough, this may not be the first time, that this subject is raised in this forum, still I wish to re-open the debate.
I feel that the SPB-SJ Jodi Porutham is better than the TMS-PS Jodi Porutham.
If MSV era was dominated by TMS-PS pair, Illayaraja saga was dominated by SPB-SJ Pair.
Both the pairs have produced wonderful songs and a treat to our ears.
Guys, which of these two pairs, do you feel, have an edge over the other and for what reasons ?

Kaumar, this Topic has been repeated many times :)
SPB + SJ is way better than TMS + PS any day
SPB + PS was better than TMS + PS , as SPB's voice is far superior than any other singers

I admire the
"Gnayuru Enbadhu Kannaaga; Thingal Enbadhu..."
song of the TMS-PS pair in the music of K.V. Mahadevan Sir, which has a sweet humming too.
For SPB-SJ combination, "Nathiyil Aadum Poo Vanam; Alaigal Veesum Saamaram" in "Kaadhal Oviyam" comes to my mind readily.
There is a great deal of understanding, co-work between SPB and SJ, which many would be aware.
Any information about the joint-work and understanding between TMS and PS ?

kUMAR,
'"Nathiyil Aadum Poo Vanam; Alaigal Veesum Saamaram" in "Kaadhal Oviyam"
was indeed remarkable, there are other countless SPB+SJ classics, take the song
Sirpi Irukuthu Muthum Irukuthe from Varmayin Niram Sigappu, by the greatest MSV.

Yes Babaji, "Varumayin Niram Sivappu" song too is a good work of the SPB-SJ pair.
Friends, like SPB often praising SJ for her improvisations, sangathis etc, has TMS too acknowledged and appreciated the prowess of PS ?
What TMS has said about PS or what has he to say about PS ?
How they regard each other ?

Kumar,
Dr.SPB is well known for his honesty & extremley humble personality for an artist of his calibre!
I don't think the same about TMS, but may be I am wrong!,
besides, rather than this, y don't we talk about their songs?

SPB has praised TMS many times on the stage... (1995, when SPB received doctorate, he talked a lot of many singers before him, right from gantasala to mano on the stage, including TMS).
TMS has not praised any singer including PS ever in his life.. In fact he even bashed Sivaji, MGR and IR on the stage when he did a show in new jersey in 2002 in front of a large audience..
I like TMS's old songs. He is one of the best singers TN has ever produced.. but he has a big ego problem...
SPB, the other hand, is so down to earth.. open, humble and kind..

Right Babaji,
How about "Oh Vasantha Raaja Thaen Sumandha Raaja" from "Neengal Kaettavai" and
"Then Sindhudhae Vaanam Unai Enai Thaalaatudhae..." from "Ponukku Thanga Manasu"
Above is for the SPB+SJ combination.
Coming to the TMS+PS combination
"Thoongaadha Kannendru Ondru" from Kungumam
and
"Amaidhiyaana Nadhiyinile Odum; Odam Alavillaadha Vellam Vandhaal Aadum"

Cho Sir's reply crept in, it seems, while I was composing my posting.
Now let me put my comments on the postings of Cho Sir.
As, he says, TMS bashed MGR and Sivaji; in fact he bashed MGR more.
Because, his opinion, is that he gave his heart and soul while singing for MGR and Sivaji.
Because when he sings for Sivaji, it will be as if Sivaji himself is singing. Same is the case with MGR too.
That too, with MGR, having been the Chief Minister, TMS opines that MGR could have spoken high of him, his singing prowess and that could have resulted in more awards, titles etc. both at the State and the Central Level.
With nothing happening, he became terribly disappointed.
Also, he could not accept MGR starting suddenly to patronise SPB.
In fact, his first song, I guess, "Aayiram Nilave Vaa" comes in a MGR film.
When it comes to a MGR film, everything is dictated by MGR and all have to accept that.
So, MSV too had, no other go but to accept the dictates of MGR.
SPB's, growing popularity, with MGR migt have made TMS turn against MGR or speak ill of him.
He feels, as if, he has been let down by Sivaji and more by MGR.
I do not know much about the TMS-IR tussle.
He was given an opportunity in IR's first film itself.
"Annakili Onna Thedudhae..."
But what happened afterwards, I do not know.
It seems, after a conflict, IR had told him that his voice lacks "Baavam".
Ironically he is
"Paatum Naane Baavamum Naane; Paadum Unai Naan Paada Vaithaene".
Even assuming, Raja continued to give chances for him, I do not know how long that would have continued.
For, in "Annakili Onna Thedudhae" itself, he was not at his best. Oru odharal was noticeable in his voice.
He has had quite a long innings and I think, age had taken a toll on his voice, at that time itself.
I agree, he may be having an EGO problem.
But he is a stuff, that TFM definitely can take pride of.
Undoubtedly, a very very good singer.

TMS yes was indeed an excellent singer, often excellent at high pitches,
As he had thin and strained/ stretch voice, he used to sound nasal at most of the times,
But TMS voice is the ONLY voice that suited Shivaji Sir, Shivaji sir only wanted
Chidambaram Sitharam??, he was an excellent singer, who used to sing for Shivaji sir prior to
TMS entry. But apparently after hearing TMS's voice, Shivaji sir wanted TMS to sing for him.
TMS had two imitators M.Vasudeav, and Kovai Soundararajan.
TMS was not great in the lower Pitches, like Dr.SPB, who is THE master at Lower Pitches, due to his
THICK voice! TMS only ruled Tamil Film Industry, during Shivaji sir / MGR sir period only, say from 1950
-1975 , but Dr.SPB ruled Tamil/Telugu/Kannada from 1975-1996 (his peak period), Dr.SPB was very famous in
Hindi as well, he bagged his 2nd national award for a Hindi movie,Ek Duche Keliye.
It is rather sad to see an exceptionally greatest singer like Dr.SPB to get his FIRST National Award in Tamil, after 30 years of singing (Minsara Kanavu)!
Dr.SPB has sung up to 40,000 songs in his 38 years of Service!, HE was a successful md, his Tamil films like
Sikaram, Thudikum Karanghal were super hit, he is also an excellent dubbing artist!
I am aware TMS composed for Tamil films and Devotional songs(excellent ones, esp the songs on Lord Muruga)
While, SPB's Siva malai , Siva arpanam are better than TMS devotional songs, though no body to beat Dr.S.Govinderajan, when it comes to Devotional songs, perhaps
Dr.KJY comes close to him.
TMS does have BIG ego problem, SPB on the other hand, does not know what 'EGO' is!
Dr.SPB should not be compared with any other singers, including the great TMS, Dr.SPB can only be compared with
Greats like M.rafi sir !!!
