Dappankuthu songs are man vasanai kalandhavai and indeed have a punch in them.
They are kind of songs which will make us forget our worries and simply enjoy the song.

I could remember the following dappankuthu (super hit )songs:

Can we please first define dappangkuthu? There seems to be a lot of confusion here. I think I know what is dappanguthu, so does wveryone who is posting here - but they all seem to differ. Can we have an agreed definition?

I feel duppankuthu is a song which has a rhythm that has the same connotation as duppava thattu. It will have a beat throughout the song which will makes you tap your feet. What more can I explain? The best examples for duppankuthu from the above listed songs could be:

1)lolakku dol dappi ma
2)koodaiyile karuvadu koonthalile pookkadu
3)nee munnale pona
4)annathai aadura
etc. etc.

I think that most of Arvind's songs are good duppankuthu songs.

I don't know for sure if I'm right folks but I don't think Arvind has got the meaning of Dappankoothu right. Definitely "Maanguyile", "Maarugo" and "Paeru Vechalum" are not DPthu songs and cannot be listed along with "Laalakku ","Koodayile" etc.

I remember a perfect DPthu by IR in the film "My Dear Marthandan". It goes "Ootalakkadi"
and is a real catchy song.

Similarly the song "Oyillalo" from GUNA is also a good DPthu composition.

The song "Vanjuram Vovval" from CHEMBARUTHI is also a great song, but honestly I don't know if its DPthu.

What is dappangutthu?
Any fast song cannot be dappanguththu? It is the beat that makes it dappanguththu.

Manguyile is definitely one, that has the beat.

Same is the case with peru vachaalum.

You are right. Asaiya kaathula thoodhu from Johnny can not really be classified as a dappanguthu. Perhaps considering the melody of the other songs in that movie made me classify this one as dappanguthu.
PS: pardon my late response.

To Arvind: a small correction to the definition of Dpthu. It is not any beat but mostly the beat that comes from local melams.

Dear Sathiya Keerthi, Are you sure about "Asai adhigam vechu"? If all songs with catchy beats turn out to be DPthu then all songs with beats could be called so too. I don't for sure if I'm wrong in accusing you,but please give an explanation if you know more about this. I'll be pleased. Thanks.

Dapaankoothu has been Raja's forte. He has as mentioned before tried unusual ragas for Dapaankoothu. The example of Machi manaaru... in En Uyir Thozhan is composed in Mayamaalawagowlai. Other dapaankaoothu songs in the same raga are "Vellikizhame, Vellakuvachi, Maligapoova, thalayilvachii...." in Siva & "Kozhi koovum nerathula..." in VannaVanna pookal.

Sometimes it becomes difficult to precisely define daapankoothu and "Chalaku chalaku selai.." in Chakaravagam IMO is not dapaankoothu.

Only Raja could give a daapankoothu with a vein of pathos. The song is "Olai Olai kudisaiyila, konchi konchi vilayaaduvom..." in Anand & "Thaangaliye aathaa on solluthaan, thaangiputen ippo naan kalluthaan..." in Nadigan.

You may be right. I think "Thaangaliye aathaa on solluthaan..." may not be in Nadigan. However, it was during the time when a new Satyaraj's movie was being released every month. I am quite sure that this movie had Satyaraj, Bhanupriya, Manorama etc. The directed was by Pratap Pothen. Other songs in this movie are
1. Karpulla kaaLaiya katti potta paatiye...an excellent song by SPB.
2. Sivappana chinna pappa, silai pole minuthappa... a duet by SPB & SJ-also a good song.

With this additional information can anybody recall the name of this movie?

Thats it! I am sure its magudam. Yes I have all the 6 songs in this movie and all of them are different and great. Actually, Hindu gave a great review for the songs when this movie was released.

More dappankoothu with innovations:
1. Chutti chutti un vaya koncham suruti koLLadi....in Chinnagownder. The use of Ghatam as an alternative rythm instrument to dholak in the first stanza is excellent.

2. Yenna manam ulla poNNunu maruthaiyile ketaanga.... in Chinna pasanga naanga. A slow and engrossing dapaankoothu with lots of "mann vaasanai".

3. Kottu kaLi kottu naayanam ketkuthu vaatuthu.... in a Prabhu movie which I dont remember. Again, this is composed in Mayamalawagowlai ragam same as that of Macchi manaaru... Kottu kaLi... is a riot of a song!

4. Motta maadi Motta maadi...in Anjali is a very beautifully modified dapaankoothu. If you listen carefully the song starts with a beat on the drums which is a modified version of Annathey aadaraar. This is essentially a sophisticated version of our local dapaankoothu. However, the song takes a very different shade as it proceeds and is hard to see the dapaankoothu skeleton within its mordern orchestrated body.
