What did Singapore-based TFM readers think of the recent October Minnal show in Singapore in which Hariharan, Anu Sriram, Unni Menon and Harini sang? The most memorable and unusual part of the show, for me, was the fact that for once singers from India were able to shed their inhibitions and show some motion. (Singers from India typically stand at attention as if doing the national anthem. Mano may be an exception.) Hariharan set the ball rolling that evening, jiving, rocking, waltzing and even bhangraing, and inspiring Anuradha and Unni Menon to do likewise. The singing was generally OK; they didn't do very demanding songs. The band was lousy, playing offkey at times. But, on the whole, a memorable show.

Sundram
I did not go to October minnal. I feel $30 is too much for Hariharan. Now I realise that I was saved because of my 'economic' policy. Sorry to say - I personally cannot tolerate singers dancing on stage while singing. They are there to sing. Not to dance, gasp for breath and spoil the song. Sorry if I had offended you.

Sundaram & Aravind - That is the exact reason why our TFM singers are called playback singers unlike their western counterparts. They have no showmanship at all. But because of kaalaththin kattayam and their desire to increase their income, they are forced to appear onstage. But the main difference between them and their western (in fact anywahere else in the world) counterparts is their talent. Unlike elsewhere, any suppan-kuppan (only TFM maintainers know why I use this term!!!) cannot become singers in India. The chosen few are the top of the class. So, if what you want is this precious talent, then Indian concerts are for you. If not, there are lots of local concerts with plenty of showmanship (talents? - what about talents?)!
I saw a concert, Isai Arasi S. Janakiyin Innisai Koalangal on video yesterday. Allow me to share it with you. The music was by Raguraj and his orchestra. (More than 50 people, with lots of violin) Starlets performed a few songs before Janaki took over. She had a really large pottu covering almost her entire forehead! Apparently she doesn't belive in make up; there was not a little bit of glamour on her. She missed her cue a number of times (because of the thousands of songs she has sung?) but caught up quite admirably. She began and ended with IR songs, probably as a tribute to him.
The IR songs she sang included:
Chinna-chinna vanna kuyil (first song)
Paadavaa un paadalai
Chinna Kannan azhaikiraan
Kotta paakum kozhunthu veththeleiyum (I haven't heard this before.)
Azhagu malaraada
Thedum kann paarvai thavikka
Adi aathaadi
Rojavei thaalaattu thendral
Sundari kannal oru seithi
Machchanei paartheengala (last song)
The only new song (and non-IR) she sang was Malarey mounama.
Oldies (before IR) were:
Unnidathil yennai koduthein
Kaalaiyum neeyey
Singaara velanei theva (I just could not differentiate her rendition from the original!)
Intha mandrathil oadivarum
Ninaithaal poathum paaduvein
I hope the list above helps some of you who are collecting songs such as SJ solo with IR, pre-IR S.J., etc.

released on both 96.8 and radio 6.
btw, it's another non-IR song. MD:Sirpi

There should be a comma after "released" in
my post above.
